Sitting at a strategic position along the Thames River, water has played a significant part in the growth of Groton, Connecticut. Visit Fort Griswold, a Revolutionary War era base built to defend the port of New London, most infamously known as the site of the betrayal of American forces by Benedict Arnold. Groton is also the "Submarine Capital of the World," home to the US Navy's main submarine base, as well as the Submarine Force Museum, where visitors can board the first nuclear submarine.

Attractively styled lighthouse which was in operation from 1944 to 1967.
Went out to Avery Point, located on the UConn Campus to watch the sunset on a beautiful evening. We use to come out here when we lived here 33 years ago. On the weekends parking was free and not crowded at all. We walked around the paths looking at all the art work displayed and sat out on the rocks overlooking the sound watching the ships and ferry's go by until the sunset. We walked down to the lighthouse but you are not allowed to go inside. If you're looking for a relaxing evening that costs nothing, then this is the place to experience it all with the family or someone special.

A great place for young and old especially if you enjoy American History. Beautiful breathtaking views of the Thames River and the Groton Bank. Stop by the Bill Library to round off tip at the top of the Bank and then visit the Avery Cop House on Thames ST. Great day trip for both locals and tourists.
