Jacobuskerk Zeerijp

Reviewed By Robert937 - Rotterdam, The Netherlands

While other churches in Groningen underwent significant changes through the ages, this one in Zeerijp stayed the same since 1350. Built in Roman-Gothic style the red brick structure is still impressive, as is the tower built about 100 years later. I especially liked the amazing masonry and colorful arabesque ornamentation. When I visited on a Monday afternoon someone was playing the organ, but there was not a soul to be seen. Great initiative of the Groninger kerken association to open 50 churches to the public. Zeerijp not only keeps the church open, but also displays some information brochures after entering through the double door space at the northside (tochtportaal).

Synagogue Groningen

Reviewed By Simone194 - Groningen, The Netherlands

Groningen has a larger to smaller Jewish community over the centuries. Due to WWII with the grueling holocaust most Jews from Groningen could not return, as they were murdered. Of the few surviving ones quite some emigrated to Israel. This synagogue was built in 1905 in oriental style by a protestant architect named Tjeerd Kuiper. It was opened for services in 1906. After the war it was neglected and during my childhood a commercial laundry shop was operating in it. Only in 1980/81 it finally was restored to its beauty. Sometimes there are art exhibitions in it. Then the part fo the synagogue is not open to the public. For a tour of that, it is very worthwhile the trouble to look at internet for opening hours to book a guided tour.
