This weekend was the annual event "Christmas at the Fort", both Festival and Re-Enactments. Friday Dec. 11 was pretty much rained out, but yesterday (Saturday Dec. 12) the weather was perfect! There were vendors inside the Fort displaying their hand made items, with some providing live demonstrations of "how they do it". The demos included Flint Knapping - the art of shaping the arrowheads of the day (the "points".) We weren't there long enough to enjoy all that was offered, but the "Gunfight" with blackjack was fun, as was the "Circle Dancing" and music . Santa was inside the main building entertaining the kids and adults alike, nice little gift shop and very welcoming personnel. All the exhibitors and the performers were extremely friendly and eager to share their stories, experiences, and the lore that had been passed down through their families. There were wagon rides, canons firing periodically, and food! The log cabins were open to visitors, displaying photos and artifacts and authentic furnishings of the day. This was, of course, the Fort from which the mother of famous Comanche Warrior Quanah Parker (Cynthia Ann Parker) was kidnapped at the age of 9 by a Comanche raiding party. This is History, and at Old Fort Parker, they are doing a wonderful job of bringing that history alive!
