Open Fridays 10-4, Saturday, Sunday 1 - 4pm Original artworks by May Gibbs, creator of the iconic Gum-Nut Babies and Snugglepot and Cuddlepie with items of local history are exhibited in this distinctive 1904 building restored as an Art Museum and Gallery. From 1889 May Gibbs lived in a charming home across the road from this building, part of a unique group of five heritage buildings.
The South Perth Historical Society is housed in a handsome colonial era red brick building. Displays change regularly -- when I visited, it was an exhibition devoted to May Gibbs, who is best known for her Gumnut Babies. The museum is open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Fridays and 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday. Entry is gratis. The museum is on the corner of Mends St and Mill Point Road. Parking is usually available nearby.

The Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, located within The University of Western Australia is considered one of the finest university galleries in Australia. The Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery presents an innovative program of exhibitions, featuring the University's extensive art collection, as well as new, contemporary art and touring shows.
This is a hidden gem. I lived in Perth for about 12 years and visited the art gallery of WA many times before I found out about this place. Its strength is its changing exhibitions - I can go back regularly and enjoy every trip.

The recent opening of the Western Australian Museum Boola Bardip adds a new dimension to the Perth Cultural Cenre which had been sadly lacking while the previous WA Museum was being rebuilt. The area around James St was once run down, but it is now the cultural hub of Perth. The WA Art Gallery has a good collection, including local artists. The State Library of WA has an unmatched collection of WA publications, including the Battye Library, which concentrates on WA's local history. PICA -- the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts -- usually has something interesting on show, and the theatre centre showcases live performance. The Cultural Centre is connected to the Perth Railway Station by a convenient walkway. It's easy to spend a day checking out the Cultural Centre, there's something new every time I visit Perth.

Always a good place to visit, right next to the main Perth Railway Station. I enjoyed strolling around for an hour or so - made easy by free entry. Exhibitions are always interesting and there is a nice shop. Staff are always helpful. We are lucky in Perth to have this gallery.

The well-stocked book shop and the local creative art work in the shop and the delicious food in the 'Canvas Cafe under the shady trees are all worth the visit. But then .. you have several lovely gallery spaces with a changing variety of Art works of many styles; and the truly absorbing story and glimpses of this historical grand old colonial building. What good fortune that a thoughtful City Council (and persuasive citizens) caused it to be saved and renovated over 50 years ago. An artist's delight to have a studio there. It is a great place for Children to visit. and there are often lovely concerts and shows there. Definitely put it on your 'Freo' List. More than once!
