A town literally carved into the volcanic rock, Goreme is the gateway to the Goreme National Park, a vast UNESCO World Heritage Site that houses spectacular 10th- and 11th-century cave churches. The park itself is known for its chimney rock formations and is very popular with backpackers. It’s also a great area to sample Turkish cuisine and wine.

The Tokali Church is carved into the hillside at a location just down the hill from the entrance to the Goreme Open Air Museum. Some reviewers say you have to have a ticket for the Open Air Museum to view the Tokali Church, but I don't think that's true. In any case, if you're there, you're probably going to have a ticket to the museum in any case. The frescoes inside the church are stupendous and getting a cleaning and restoration, so will hopefully be even better in the future!

The paintings are very special within narrow tunnels and many chambers, still stunning surroundings and beautiful architecture. Book a guide if you can it will be so useful!
