Very well done displays about the history of the area and the birth of the Republic of Texas. Walk through the historic presidio and imagine the events that happened here - the Goliad Massacre of Fannin and his men. Learn about the battle cry "Remember the Alamo. Remember Goliad."

Goliad State Park & Mission Espiritu Santo State Historic Site

Reviewed By eireannamerican - Topeka, Kansas

Looks good from the outside... with issues. We wanted to see inside the historical and beautiful buildings, but sadly arrived just past the 5pm closing time. Unfortunately, the hours are not extended during the long summer days. The mission gift shop was closed, the Presidio was closed, Zaragoza birthplace closed. None of that stopped the park patrol from trying to get $6 because we drove onto the grounds. Well, that wouldn't be a problem except that there is no one at the gate to take the money. No one to make change. I only had $20 bills and credit cards. It's a very reasonable and inexpensive entrance fee ($3 for those over 13) and it's great to support the Texas State Parks (and all state parks), but if I were to use a $20 bill that there is nowhere close to get change for, a $14 tip is a bit much for closed buildings. Couldn't do that on a travel budget. The expectation on site is that visitors put the funds in an envelope and drop it in a slot. Didn't have change, and no one to make it; not even the ranger who insisted we pay because I was parked a few minutes on the lot. Don't get me wrong, she was very nice, and a very lovely lady, but I'd think there'd be a better system in play if there is an insistence to pay after all the buildings and cash registers are closed. So... the moral of the story? Carry small bills, make change before arriving (Goliad is sparse and the park is located outside the village, so plan ahead), or better yet, check for operating hours and visit the inside of the buildings. I'm sure they are worthwhile. And - thanks to the State Park rangers for kindness and professionalism.

Justice was not far away in Goliad County. Once the verdict was in (guilty), the hanging tree on the courthouse grounds was only steps away.

These Live Oak Trees live a long time. Too bad they can't talk. What interesting stories this one could tell.

Be sure to read the historical marker beside the tree.

We had such a relaxed time. Really good beer, really friendly people and the food truxcts were a great added touch. We have enver been here, and just popped in. We ended up staying for hours. Kids, dog, food, beer and good company...who could ask for more. The fire pit was was warm and welcoming. The music was very good. I did not get the name of the man and woman duo, but they were very good. Check this place out. It is unique and fun! We intend on taking out son and his family soon!

Our Lady of Loreto Chapel

One of the oldest churches in the country, still offering Sunday services.

Reviewed By P5_Crazy_Train - G-Patch, Texas

This is a stunningly beautiful, yet simple, little chapel within the walls of the Presidio la Bahia in Goliad. It is still a functioning Catholic Church, and it is obvious that it is well loved and well cared for. The altar and the fresco painted behind it are stunning works of art that have been there for ages. The smell of hundreds of years of incense gives so much depth to the entire experience. You could spend hours within the walls of the chapel just soaking in the history of the place. I'm Catholic, and the amazing structures in Texas that were built by the missionaries have stood for centuries. They are breathtaking. Our Lady of Loreto is nothing to just drive by without a second glance. Definitely drop in for a visit.

Commercial Street Bar

The owners of the Commercial Street Bar in Goliad, Texas, did an outstanding job restoring and bringing to life a once "dead" building. The bar is tastefully redone with gorgeous hardwoods and sparkling lighting. The bar serves Goliad's own micro brew, as well as a selection of wines and other beers. The bar is set up with the typical saloon style bar, lounge seating, and table and chairs. Groups meet there to play cards and dominoes, while couples cuddle in the comfy lounge areas. The rustic design paired with sheer elegance makes this bar a really refreshing addition to Goliad's once dying night life. They also feature local musicians!

Fannin Plaza Park

Reviewed By wildbillwww - Dallas, Texas

This is a nice tree covered park one block North of Goliad Town Square. A children's playground is located on the East side. The park features two historic cannons recovered from the Battle of Goliad. A memorial monument, in tribute to Fannin and his men, was added in 1882. This shrine is dedicated to the murder and sacrifice of Fannin and his men who surrendered to Santa Anna and his forces expecting fair treatment. "Remember Goliad, remember the Alamo !!"
