We walked here from our hotel .The fountain and towering column was erected 1894 - 1902. Amazing status of sea horses and sculptures. The only negative is the amusement park spoiled some of the view.

Passing through Porte Dijeaux we enter the old Historic area of Bordeaux. This takes us into the area with lots of great shops and restaurants. It is amazing and ancient .

This arch is opposite the lovely Pont de Pierre, or Stone Bridge on the River Garonne. It's an 18th century construction and is meant to be a city Gate. Obviously it has a bit of history behind it as well. It looks quite nice and it is worth a stop for a few minutes.

It is a cast iron sculpture of a woman's face; the piece is the work of a Catalan sculpture Jaume Plensa. There are about 11 or 12 throughout the city. What we liked was the juxtaposition of the very new against a backdrop of formal (and much older) architecture. It brings a refreshing escape from antiquity. We looked at her closed eyes and tried to imagine what she may have been dreaming of. There a peacefulness in her visage. In the alternative, death masks also have this serenity to them, too. Until such time as someone sits down to interview Mr. Plens about the sculpture, it is open to our own interpretation. The weathering of the metal to such a golden-orange hue stood out against the drab and colorless surroundings.
