On a trip from Minnesota to visit my adult daughter in California, she brought me to Kirigin -- one of her favorites. The tasting room and grounds are beautiful, even in January off-season. The staff was attentive and knowledgeable. We brought a picnic lunch. After our wine tasting, we bought a bottle of Riesling and sat in the lovely patio area to eat, drink wine and visit. Kirigin has a wine for just about every taste. I'm not a huge fan of sweet wines, but they have a red chocolatey dessert wine for was awesome. This was my favorite winery of my whole trip, and I hope to return soon! They also offer space for banquets and events like weddings. It would be a lovely spot for a wedding.

Premium Rhone style Wines from the Santa Clara Valley. Where Friends Become Family… Aver Family Vineyards was established in 2005 when John and Carolyn Aver purchased an 8.25 vineyard located in the Uvas Valley of Santa Clara County. The vineyard and surrounding countryside create spectacular views and provide an idyllic setting for the outdoor tasting room. Visitors can discover the premium wine selection that features Rhone varietals. The wines are paired with locally-sourced chocolates to enhance the tasting experience. The Vigneron, John Aver, crafts his wines from grapes that are either grown on the property or sourced from prominent California vineyards including Durell, Catie’s Corner and Gap’s Crown. The estate vineyard is cultivated using holistic farming practices and supplies Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Petite Sirah grapes. The tasting room is open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 – 4:00.

I’d heard from wine friends that I had to try this place. We were on our way to Carmel and stopped by the weekend after Thanksgiving. The tasting room is set way back from the road, out of site from the road behind a little hill. The parking lot was full and a bunch of people were sitting outside at picnic benches. When we got into the tasting room the place was packed and we were worried they wouldn’t take care of us. But within about twenty seconds some nice young man appeared and found us a little table to stand at - the bar was too full to get to. We did their standard 5-wine tasting ($15) and we were both real impressed. But the guy who poured for us was exceptional; he knew everything about the different wines and made sure we were never waiting; even though he was probably serving 5 groups. He said it was frequently busy on the weekends but that the holiday weekend was out of control busy. I liked all the wines and so did wifey. The Chardonnay was notable but the Pinots were fantastic. This month they were showcasing 2017 Santa Lucia Highlands and a 2017 Estate Pinots, both were good, and you could really tell the difference between the different growing areas. Having never heard of the area before I was really impressed with their Estate Pinot, real concentrated and fruity but with classic Pinot character too. Great experience, wish we could remember the name of the guy who helped us, he was really great. Well worth a visit.
