You can go whitewater rafting in the rapids or swim the rapids on river boards, kayak the river with one of our guides, or rent kayaks and explore the river by yourself. Experience prison conditions of the past in two unique prison buildings. Follow history from the old castle jail with its underground dungeons, dating back to the mid-1600s, to one of Sweden’s first penitentiaries, dating from 1847. You will witness the Swedish prison system, which developed from a period of public enforced shame and corporal punishment to a time when prisoners were isolated from society in what we now call solitary confinement. Swedish Railway Museum is the central institution within Swedish National Maritime Museums which also oversees its three sister museums, the Naval Museum, the Vasa Museum and the Maritime Museum. During the early 1900s, objects began to be collected that were considered to be of historical value for the future. The collections are of international top class and consists of over 300 vehicles from the mid-1800s to the present day. The County Museum of Gävleborg owns outstanding collections of Swedish art and design, with 300 paintings and sculptures on display. The museum also shows the famous design by Gunnar Cyrén and thousands of industrial design products and handicraft. You can use an audio guide to take the “highlight tour”. Mackmyra – Explorers in whisky. The Swedish original since 1999. We had a dream. To create the first Swedish malt whisky. We chose our own way and developed it from scratch. The road was neither the easiest nor the fastest. But it was the right one, we reached our goal. A Swedish malt whisky with its own identity. In our 35 meter high distillery, we have traceability right down to the individual grain fields, and furthermore space to continue looking beyond the traditional. The storage of the small handmade casks is an example. Another is the Swedish oak who so generously share its character to the whisky. In Mackmyra Whisky Village, just outside Gavle, you will find our distillery, forest warehouse, and visitor center with restaurant. Enjoy a delicious meal, try our whisky and see how we manufacture Swedish whisky. We’ll take you to the top of the distillery and guide you through the whole process from top to bottom.
