Fussa Tanabata Festival

The Fussa Tanabata Festival is held mainly along the Ekimae-dori, Ginza-dori, and Sakae-dori roads on the west side of JR Fussa Station. The colorful Tanabata decorations are original and unique, made by local shopkeepers. Since awards are given to the best decorations, it motivates the shopkeepers. About 100 food stalls serve food from around the world. There is also a parade of portable shrines, floats, and a fire brigade to add to the festivities.

During our two assignments at Yokota Air Base we attended every Tanabata Matsuri (festival) and loved every minute of it. We ate some great food, drank some fine Sake and watched some fantastic dance and listened to various types of music. We really miss Japan and our Japanese friends (who really made our memorable and enjoyable).

It was quite a 15-min.walk from the station. The location is not strategic but it sure is peaceful there. The library is a bit smaller than the others I have visited in Japan and they have few English books.

Kumagawa Shrine

First hand I have to let you know that I lived in this area for more than 3 years and not only got to see the best of the best but I got to see what the real areas were really about. This Shrine is a wonderful stop over and a great place to see if you are in this area you do not want to miss this.
The beauty and the workmanship is breath taking for there is not one part that is made with modern equipment. As all Shrine's in Japan there is constant working going on and most of the time if you look around you will see someone making a part or piece that will go on the Shrine. This goes back for many centuries so it always makes seeing a Shrine worth the stop. I have seen many Shrines and there are not any two alike and there is always some type of work going on that you can see for the maintainers work every day of the week in order to keep the buildings looking like they were just built yesterday. But be assured they were not. Please be respectful when they ask you to take off your shoes and this does not happen often but it can and when you are asked to and you see what you are about to see you will be very understanding for it is this one little thing that will save it for many others to see.
