Along Fudong Highway, Provincial Highway 23, located in the southernmost tip of Hualien, a group of Amis farm rice terraces here for generations with six-century-old irrigation ditches and continues the value of land and safeguard their beautiful valley homeland embraced by mountains. This is the Cilamitay tribe. Fengnan Community has a mixture of Minnan, Han, Hakka, and Amis people, with Amis as the dominant ethnic group. Originally called "Cilamitay", means the place with the root of trees. In 2012, the Ciharaay settlement of the Cilamitay tribe was approved for registration as the Ciharaay Culture Landscape Park by the Hualien County Government. Major cultural landscapes in the park include terraces, irrigation ditches, and settlements. Like vessels in the human body, these irrigation ditches link the life and culture of the Cilamitay tribe. Value of the Landscape Park: Endless succession of resources through the living wisdom of harmonious interaction between man and nature.

The visit of Sixty Rock Mountain for the Orange Daylily (aka Golden Needle) flower sea is one of main goal of this trip. We missed the flower season two years ago, so it’s definitely very important for all of us. Lucky us to have a sunny day with a lot of flowers. Basically, farmers would save some field for sight seeing to let the flowers widely open to form the flower sea to attract people. Other remote (not by the roadsides) field would harvest to dry or sell freshly which you won’t see any flowers. One of famous dish is golden needle flower spare rib soup. Actually, it’s fine to eat the dried one as snack. We stopped by a small coffee shop by the roadside to have a cup of coffee. We ended up to buy a lot of dried golden needle flower from the store once we know she is also a Hakka. I bought some golden fruit for my mom as well.

Overheard a tour guide saying that the mountain top view is far better. Now I fully understood what he meant. Standing on mountain top, you look down 360 degree to explore the golden flower sea with different backgrounds to make the views more gorgeous & magnificent. We are lucky to come here earlier to avoid the crowds, thus we can relax to fully enjoy all the fabulous views as we wish. Definitely a must do activity if you come to Hualien during the flower season.
