Grotta Gigante, located near Trieste (20 min by car, 30 by bus) and close to highway Venice - Slovenia/Croatia (5 min from exit "Sgonico" or "Prosecco") is the only show cave on Italian land so named "Carst" . It's the show cave with the largest natural hall inside in Europe(98,5 m high, 76 m wide and 167 m long). Inside temperature 11°C all the year. 500 steps from entrance to deepest point of tourist path. Many stalactites and stalagmites (the largest is 12 meters high). Total lenght of tourist path: 860 meters. Open all the year.
About a 30 minute drive from Trieste is the Grotta Gigante. This is a truly unique, amazing, massive cave that photos don’t do justice to. Be aware that there are 500 steps down and then up. If one is fit, this is not a problem as the guides stop periodically going down and try not to hurry you going back up. If you have some issues with your feet, knees, or shortness of breath, etc. then it might be better to take a trip instead to Postojna Cave in Slovenia which has a train to take visitors around. In terms of impressive size, Grotta Gigante is well worth the visit if you can do the steps. From entrance into the cave to exit, the whole visit lasts just a little over an hour.
