Local legend claims that Freeport was the birthplace of Maine, the decision to separate from Massachusetts having been made in a local tavern way back in 1789. Whether this is truth or folklore, Freeport has much more to offer, including South Freeport, a historic harbourfront village offering up a fresh catch every day. Nearby Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park and the Mast Landing Audubon Sanctuary provide nature trails with scenic views of the Atlantic Ocean over the rocky shores of Maine.

Maine state park that offers a scenic walk along Casco Bay.
We visited on a cool, sunny fall day when conditions were perfect for walking and enjoying the water views. It was too late in the season to see any ospreys, but the island nesting site was visible from the shore. We encountered a number of other visitors, some of whom were jogging, others walking a dog, and some who were there hoping for great pictures. It's a beautiful area.

The brewery offers at least 10 varieties of beer ranging from light to heavy citrus blends to a dark chocolate/coffee variety. The flights are reasonably priced. The Maine Beer Company also has a sandwich tent located outside their front entrance. The only negative is that there is not enough seating areas to accommodate the large crowd of tasters that show up on the weekend.

Scenic coastal drive measuring 203 miles from Freeport to Quoddy Head.
Think Highway 1 in California. This is another iconic highway. Spectacular roadway. Don’t rush, dawdle. Stop. Gawk. Walk. Enjoy the journey.

Bradbury mountain is a wonderful spot for a short hike and beautiful views. On a clear day one can see for miles. The short hikes are fairly well marked but I must admit I have gotten lost on one occasion! The hike is not strenuous and offers A glimpse into hiking in the main woods. It is particularly nice on top in the fall when the leaves are changing or when the weather is good for a picnic up top.

A mile of shopping outlets including such stores as L.L. Bean, Ralph Lauren, Patagonia, Clinique, Totes and many more.
We have done Black Friday Shopping in Bangor and Augusta the last few years. This year we started our shopping in Freeport. We started at midnight and shopped for a few hours. It was a very festive atmosphere. It was not over crowded like the malls.

Nice, quiet campground with a beach and 5 miles from Freeport's main shopping district. Our campsite was very spacious, completely level, had a large picnic table and view of the open waters of Casco Bay even though our site was not beachfront. When we visited, the closest restroom was closed due to water safety issues, so we had to make the longer walk a couple hundred yards or so away to the next closest facility. Restroom was clean and adequate.
Easy waking access to the beach and playground where dogs are not permitted.

This nonprofit farm's 626 oceanfront acres and 4 miles of Casco Bay shoreline are open free to public every day. Visit the animals in the barn, explore miles of walking trails, picnic by the water, and visit the Discovery Gardens. Seasonal camping, summer day camp, kayak and bicycle rentals, family farm programs, lobster bakes and history haywagon tours. Located just 10 minutes from L.L. Bean.
Wolfe's Neck Farm is a wonderful place to visit regardless if you have kids or not. It's so picturesque and if you're lucky to be around when it's time for the cows to cross the road, you'll be amazed at how they follow each other! They readily have calves just waiting to be gushed over! They also have sheep, goats, chickens, and ducks (from what we saw). Their farm stand is quaint and you purchase on an honor system. There is a covered picnic area (during the season) and of course, Mr. McGregor's garden to check out!

The selection of bread was just amazing, and every one we tried was so good! We had an apple cider bread, spinach and garlic, and sourdough and they were all so good. I only wish we had a location near home.

Take a narrated-coach tour, walking tour or nature hike through Maine's 40-acres of desert sand dunes, which were formed from a glacial outwash during the Ice Age.
This is awesome.
You can tour a barn and see things like a DDT sprayer and a container used to carry all types of liquids. The tour of the desert is super great. The narration - including highlighting a movie called "Dirt" - really added to the experience.
This is a must see. Once.
But once is probably enough.
