The capital of Grand Bahama Island, founded in 1955 as a center of tourism, has undergone recent redevelopment and again offers nearly every amenity an island visitor could hope for: pristine beaches, golf, water sports, diving, gambling, duty-free shopping, boating, nightclubs and fishing. Want more? Try the Pirates of the Bahamas theme park, Freeport's International Bazaar, Port Lucaya marketplace, Garden of the Groves botanical garden, the Rand Nature Center or Lucayan National Park.

Went here as part of a tour, went to Gold Rock beach first which is heaven on earth, we weren't happy to be leaving to come here but were pleasantly surprised, the water is calm, clear and shallow, you can walk out to the sand bank, excellent beach for kids, there's also the Banana Bay restaurant for snacks, drinks and facilities, a truly beautiful place.

Local craftsman sell their jewelry and their wood and straw handicrafts at this market.
Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line is now offering daily cruises to Grand Bahamas Island. Their two ships, Grand Celebration and Grand Classica alternate daily departures from the Port of Palm Beach Florida. Each cruise is for three days and two nights. We sailed on the Classica and our expectations were exceeded! The fare is affordable making it possible for our family to upgrade to a generous suite with two rooms and a balcony. Meals are endless with choices of buffets and restaurants with fine tastes. The bar coupon package is terrific. Friendly staff adds to the enjoyment of games and shows. The full day in Freeport/Port Lucaya offers tours to swim with the dolphins, a day at the beach, shopping at the straw market, and much more. We chose a banana boat adventure from sea to lagoon with a tour of millionaires row. This is the perfect choice for those who want to sample a cruise on the high seas ...at times so smooth we could barely tell we were moving!
