What to do and see in Fredericksburg, United States: The Best Places and Tips

March 13, 2018 Flossie Demartino

In the heart of Texas Hill Country, Fredericksburg is a small city with a unique German flavor in its quaint bakeries, Hauptstrasse (Main Street) boutiques and generations-old peach orchards. Weekenders from nearby San Antonio and Austin have long appreciated the charm of the city's many B&Bs and "Sunday House" Inns. The surrounding Texas Hill Country is home to lush vineyards, making up one of the country's largest viticultural areas.

National Museum of the Pacific War

Formerly the Nimitz Museum, the complex is now the only museum in the Continental United States centered on World War II's Pacific campaign. Since 1968, the Museum has expanded to occupy a six-acre campus and gained a reputation as one of the premier military museums in the nation. Over the years the Museum was upgraded and enlarged, and the campus grew to accommodate the Memorial Courtyard, the Plaza of Presidents and the Japanese Garden of Peace. We opened the expanded George H. W. Bush Gallery in 2009. The Gallery's state-of-the-art 33,000 square foot exhibition features 40 media installations, approximately 900 artifacts in 97 climate-controlled cases, 15 macro-artifacts, and hundreds of photographs. Two blocks east of the main campus is the Pacific Combat Zone. Recently reopened after an $8 million renovation. The PCZ is also home to our popular WWII Pacific Combat Program that takes place on set weekends throughout the year.

After visiting the incredible WWII Museum in New Orleans, we wanted to visit this museum, which outlines the Pacific Theater of WWII. The museum is laid out in chronological order and details the battles of the war and gives excellent insight on how the war affected Americans and the world. It is very large--the main building is off the main street of Fredericksburg, so you don't realize how expansive it is until you have gone through the initial Nimitz exhibits. The ticket is good for two days, and you will need at least that long to see it fully. There are several exits where you can break for lunch, leave the facility, and return with your ticket. I highly recommend this museum to learn many details of how the war was fought in the Pacific and how its impact changed the world. I think children and young people will enjoy it as well, it would hold their interest.

We were very Lucky to be able to visit this church as it is usually closed. The lady was so kind to let us go inside though a special ceremony was going on. This church has a beautiful colorful interior.

This center is very eye appealing when you walk in. You are instantly greeted and asked to sign the guest book. They have a small gift shop with local art work and souvenirs of Fredricksberg. There is an historic display of the history of Fredricksberg and the local area. The bathrooms were nice and clean and they provide brochures to help you navigate around the shops and streets.

We only had time to take the summit up the rock, but I’d love to return to enjoy some of the other trails. It’s about a 2 hour trip total, that’s including stopping and taking pictures along the way and not rushing ourselves.

Had been to Fredericksburg many times before, but decided to check out something new. We were not disappointed. You start with a short film that gives the history of the early German settlers. Then a number of old houses and buildings that have been preserved...MoreThank you. We appreciate your visit and review.

History buff or not, you will appreciate this extensive museum. You can easily spend several hours to a day roaming. This museum had a good variety of artifacts and an impressive amount of historical information and videos. I would not advise for children. We spent a good three hours here and didn't see it all. Very informative and educational museum.

I realize we are out of season, but for a peaceful, unhurried, quiet drive with very little traffic, and the ability to see bucolic landscape and some Vistas, this was really a nice little Drive. I wouldn't want to do it if there were a lot of people - cuz that would just ruin it.

Grape Creek Vineyards Fredericksburg

Grape Creek Vineyards is a wine club winery. We are designed for the enjoyment of our club members. Of course, we welcome new guests to taste and tour and decide if they want to join as well. We also believe wine is a pleasure, and not a party. Our guests and our wine club members like this approach, and we appreciate their positive reviews! Trip Advisor users may notice most of our negative reviews are either because we cater to club members, or because we endeavor to create a wine experience not a party place. While this may impose certain limits on larger groups and winery access, we want to stress that our focus is on wine appreciation. We hope yours is too!

Reviewed By heatherelise - Baltimore, MD

My plan was to go to grape creek and another winery across the street, and be responsible and uber rather than drive. After my tasting, I was leaving the grape creek property to walk across the road-which admittedly is a busy road/highway and I was prepared to do this carefully. The private security guard on site told me that I was not allowed to leave the property on foot. I asked if he was serious and he was adamant that we could not leave on foot. So I called another uber to take me across the street, which was absurd. I understand the winery wants its patrons to be safe, but an overbearing security guard telling people they are not allowed to leave is ridiculous. They would be better served by a less overbearing approach warning patrons about the dangers of crossing that road rather than telling people they are not allowed to leave. I spent the extra money on the uber because while I did not think he could keep me on their property, he seemed prepared to make a scene if I tried to leave on foot, which I did not want. Will not be going back and recommend you don't either. Plenty of other great, friendly wineries in the area.

Main Street

Reviewed By Susan05821 - Barnet, Vermont

I am not a shopper, but I am a walker and a lover of history and historic architecture. Main Street (and many of the surrounding side streets, too) in Fredericksburg is a wide avenue of well-maintained and well-marked historic and architectural gems. Although it is a little too commercial and touristy for my taste it is lovely. Be sure to stop at the Visitor's Center first to pick up a walking map and get acclimated. I also purchased a "Guide To The Historic Buildings of Fredericksburg and Gillespie County" that was well worth the price. Don't bother with the Pioneer Museum. You can learn just as much by walking around town and reading the historic markers. And its free! The park around the Vereins-Kirche is restful and beautiful, too.
