Old St. Ferdinand Shrine and Historic Site in Florissant, Missouri, a St. Louis suburb, consists of four historic building still standing on their original locations--the 1819 convent, 1821 church, 1840 rectory and 1888 schoolhouse. The church, which replaced an old log church that was constructed in the 1780s, is the oldest remaining church built between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains and was the home of the region's only canonized Catholic saint, Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne. The site represents a physical link to American pioneer times, the Jesuit missions to the Native Americans and the home of Catholic education in the Midwest. There is so much religious history to behold here, dating to the 1700s and 1800s, with beautiful architecture and stained-glass windows, statues and artifacts from virtually every era in Old St. Ferdinand's history. The convent, church and rectory are open for guided tours and religious pilgrimages while the schoolhouse may be used for public or private events. The convent, which was Rose Philippine Duchesne's home from 1819 to 1827 and from 1834 to 1840, displays many personal letters from the saint and her students that provide a glimpse into their daily lives and hardships. The first floor includes a chapel, two parlors and a dining room. Beneath the staircase to the second floor is a small closet where Duchesne slept so she could be close to the chapel. All of the buildings on the site were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
