What to do and see in Florida, United States: The Best Libraries

December 29, 2021 Roger Rusk

Not just for retirees and theme park enthusiasts, the Sunshine State offers beautiful beaches, pristine diving conditions, and sizzling nightlife. Salsa the night away in a smokin’ hot Miami club, or swing away at one of Kissimmee’s many premium golf courses. An airboat tour of the Everglades is an unforgettable adventure – just look out for alligators! For the risk-averse, a lazy day spent on the soft sands of an Emerald Coast beach is as rejuvenating as a spa treatment.

To our surprise, this beautiful library turned out to be a great resource for both our learning and entertainment during our recent travel introduction of FMB. These were one hour+ programs focused on archeology, history and dolphin population relevant to the area. The speakers were all well informed, professional and interesting speakers.

Sign up was quick and easy with the helpful staff. My preference is to order books online so they can be brought in from other branches and I can pick them up in one stop. I have found a wonderful selection of Florida informational books this way and intend to continue this. The downtown facility is large and bright. Parking is easy. I also enjoy downloading the Overdrive audio books to my phone for listening while I walk. I hope they continue adding titles to their catalog through Overdrive.

Museum of the Apopkans

Mr. Edward Miner’s exhibit of Early Apopka artifacts at the 1968 Folk Festival in Apopka inspired the formation of an Historical Society. He obtained forms for incorporation and secured the use of 3 rooms in the former school building that had become Apopka City. An amateur archaeological group from the Central Florida Anthropological Society, then exploring at Lake Apopka, agreed to provide exhibits of prehistoric life in the area. The public request for background for exhibit cases brought response from five well qualified artists , new residents to Apopka, who volunteered their talents and created a pictured story of Apopka history. In 2001, the current log cabin style building was constructed to house the museum.

I would be lost without this library. I am constantly heading upstairs to the books on cd section. They have a nice selection. It is open, spacious, and welcoming. The book store downstairs is also fun. Sarasota is lucky to have this.
