What to do and see in Florida Keys, Florida Keys: The Best State Parks

March 16, 2022 Matilde Konrad

Stretching 126 miles south toward Cuba, the stunning Keys are a perfect escape. Highlights along the way include Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine Key and the irrepressible Key West. Get up close with an amazing array of fish while snorkeling, diving or fishing in the warm turquoise waters. Creeks, coral and costumed spectacles are other lures along the way. Highway 1 is a spectacular ribbon tying together the islands and atolls of this paradise between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park

A beautiful state park that features land and undersea adventures.

Whether you’re spending months or just hours in the Keys, this spot should be on your “must do” list. There is so much to do - aquarium, glass-bottom boat trip out to Molasses Reef, kayaks to rent, short trails to explore, a small beach for relaxing, ... Staff is extra friendly and helpful. All facilities are clean, well maintained and clearly marked. We especially enjoyed the boat trip out to the reef. Capt. Cathi’s knowledge and enthusiasm were contagious. GO!

Five stars for ranger Helen! Rented a pontoon boat with groupon and included a stop here. Neat old house made from coral. Super nice and knowledgeable ranger. Took the kids. All the kids liked it.

Spent an afternoon strolling the beach and watching the kite surfers. It was too cold to swim or snorkel, but it was still very peaceful. Lots of little fish (including trumpet fish) and hermit crabs in the shallows. Only $7 for four of us!

Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park

Reviewed By 222tmoore - Sarasota, United States

We were happy to come upon this because the beaches aren't really walking beaches here. You park outside and walk in. Trails are mostly paved and well-marked, with information on lots of different kinds of trees. This is also a good thing to do when it's too windy to go out on the water, as the tall trees make a tunnel-type hike. There are a few different loops you can take.
