Jefferson Davis Memorial Park

Reviewed By Taylor B - Chicago, Illinois

For a Civil War historian, the great conflict between the North and the South didn't end when Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. It ended a month later, on May 9, when President Jefferson Davis of the Confederate States of America was captured by Union troops at Irwinville, Georgia. Today, the exact spot where Davis was taken into custody is marked by a granite monument with a bust of Davis. It is the centerpiece of a 13-acre state park in this small town in south Georgia. The park includes 13 picnic sties, a group shelter, a 1/3-mile nature trail, a gift shop, a playground and a museum. Built in 1939, the museum features Civil War weapons, uniforms, artifacts and exhibits about Davis and the Confederacy. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. After Lee's surrender, Davis and others in the Confederate cabinet fled in hopes of re-establishing a government, perhaps in Texas, and continuing the war. But he was tracked down in Irwinville and imprisoned in Fort Monroe outside Charleston, South Carolina. To view the site, take I-75 to exit 78. Drive 14 miles east on Highway 32 to Irwinville. Turn left on Jefferson Davis Park Road and drive one mile to the site. The property owner who donated the land to the state of Georgia for the memorial park did so with the understanding that "no Yankee ever own this hallowed ground."
