The Greek island of Santorini is a blissful spot for a getaway, and its capital, Fira, is a vision of dramatic cliffs and pristine whitewashed buildings. The Archaeological Museum contains Minoan artifacts from Fira’s ancient foundations, while several churches and monasteries offer a glimpse into the historical and contemporary religious make up of this beautiful village. Exploring the shops and cafes along Fira’s narrow footpaths is a leisurely way to spend an afternoon.

One of the most photographed motifs in all of Firá is definitely the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, which looks really inconspicuous at first glance from the way. The real highlight, however, is the view of the blue dome from above.

The line for the cable car down on a hot day was long so we opted for the stairs - 25 minutes down to the Old Port our waiter at lunch told us! Those 588 wide stairs (each requiring multiple steps), dancing between the donkey droppings, donkey's nudging our shoulders to move along and stopping for multiple water breaks - 65 minutes later we were down. Exhilarating, and exhausting.
