What to do and see in Evora, Alentejo: The Best Archaeology Tours

August 20, 2021 Vergie Nakamoto

Time seems to stand still in Evora, a well-preserved medieval town that features protective walls, a 13th-century cathedral, several palaces, and a 1st-century Roman temple. No surprise that the town center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Even though it’s kind of creepy, don’t miss the Chapel of Bones, where the remains of nuns and monks are arranged in a haunting mosaic.

We don't remember how we stumbled upon this tour, but we are very glad we did! The Twizy is this fun little car to drive and going off-road is kind off hilarious. The Megalithics of Almendres were nice to see and after we saw those, there was some time to explore the city on our own. The explanation the guy who brought the Twizy gave was very clear. So if you want to see the Megalithics and be funky while visiting them: look no further! Also: very COVID-19 proof as the car was cleaned before our use.

Further south of Lisbon you will be discovering the region of Alentejo. On the way to Alentejo you will notice the presence of large fields of cork oaks and olive trees. No less gorgeous, is the outstanding relief of the landscape either flat and hilly, an infinity of land. There is a great opportunity for visiting the traditional shops and factories of the famous rags of Arraiolos dating back probably since the XVII century. The rags are part of the traditional hand embroidered Portuguese tapestry illustrating its cheerful colors. Continuing on the road towards Évora once there, a feeling of living back on time is marked by the ruins of a Roman Temple, medieval Churches and protecting walls, a revolutionary history conquered square and the cobbled streets following the white typical Alentejo homes. Last but not least, you will be visiting the superb megalithic complex of Cromlech of Almendres dating back about 2000 years before the Stonehenge.

Our second day out with Rui. After a drive through the hills we arrived at Quinta Santa Maria in Gidril, a village perched on the edge of a valley. We were greeted by our British expat host who guided us through the beautiful grounds and outbuildings of the Quinta tasting wines and enjoying nibbles along the way. The wines were flavourful, and the nibbles carefully chosen to enhance each we tasted. Before leaving we purchased a couple of bottles to savour at home, of course! Next stop of the day was The Monastery at Mafra. While this 400 room palace may once have housed a monastery, it was the biggest and most ornate of the several palaces we were able to visit during our time in Portugal- built with Brazilian gold and reputed to have emptied the treasury! Rui will do custom tours, as ell: For our third trip we have Rui taking us on a self-designed Templar Castle tour. We suggested three sites we wished to visit and he put together our itinerary ending with a boat ride to The island of Castelo Almourol. Bound to be another magical day!

This tour mentioned that we would go to Pena palace, unfortunately the roads were closed and as an alternative, we had lots of free time to visit another palace which wasn’t too interesting or very impressive. Also, we had to pay for the entry into Sintra, which was disappointing. The tour also mentioned going to the casino, went in fact you just drive past it?! The only positives were: Sintra was lovely and the restaurant in Cascais did excellent food (which isn’t part of the tour). Overall, I would read the inclusions/exclusions before booking this tour. Very disappointing.
