I recommend visiting a 'visitor's center' for the Redwood National Park to get an overview of the collection of land parcels that make up the Redwood National and State Parks so that you can appreciate what's left of the giant redwoods. Even along US Highway 101, there are easy on/off to enjoy glimpse of some great groves. Remember there is only 4% of the original forest left - hence the collection of small parcels, but still incredible.

A museum specializing in Humboldt County history with numerous Native American artifacts.
This building was absolutely beautiful and filled with amazing items to browse and learn more about Humboldt County, the rich Native American history of the area, and was staffed by friendly and helpful employees. The location was right in the middle of downtown which made it great for walkability and to be near many of the local attractions and restaurants.

Small zoo with very nice facilities, super clean and a fun variety of animals. Highlights; red panda, gibbon, river otters (adorable), red ibis, bald eagles and the most pristine captive flamingos I’ve ever seen. For $10 well worth stopping by for an hour or so.

There’s a two mile round trip paved trail. There are other trails through the woods too. There was an old logging camp there around 1900 that left and over time the forest took over and there are only a couple things remaining from the camp; foundation of a house and a large barn.
