Colchester Castle Museum

Colchester Castle is the largest Norman Keep in Europe. Constructed on the foundations of the Temple of Claudius, built when Colchester was the first Roman capital of Britain, the Castle Museum today reveals many fascinating layers of history to visitors. Archaeological collections of international quality covering 2,500 years of history are beautifully showcased, including of the most important Roman finds in Britain

The museum aspect of the castle is very well designed so you can follow a timeline from the Iron Age through the Romans to medieval and modern Colchester. I took a guided tour which went to parts of the castle not open to the general public like the foundations of the temple to the deified Claudius which I definitely recommend.

Hadleigh Castle

We call this place Windy castle as there's always a breeze! One of our favourite places. Parking is a bit difficult so definitely recommend getting there early. The walk to the castle isn't too long and then the views when you get there are beautiful overlooking the estuary. The ruins are very atmospheric although its quite a challenge to stop children climbing on them! The Salvation Army Cafe by the carpark is brilliant with great views if you sit outside and very reasonable prices.

Hedingham Castle

Spectacular wedding venue, Family Events and ancient monument. The 900 year old Norman keep of Hedingham Castle stands in 160 acres of spectacularly beautiful landscaped gardens and woodland where the Lindsay family, descendants of the original owners, the De Veres, still live.Hedingham Castle is not just one place. Romantic, beautiful, ancient, historic and wild, it is somewhere to set your imagination free. Privately owned, its character is unique, and its history is the heritage of us all.

Excellent place informative owner who was happy to fill us in with the history of the Norman building schemes in East Anglia and what has happened to the various similar castles in the meantime
