Home to a rare, pristine monadnock, Panola Mountain State Park provides you an oasis near Metro Atlanta to play, unwind, learn or discover the diverse natural and cultural heritage of the piedmont region.
The only way to access the mountain is to go with a park ranger. The trail will take you through a softwood, and then a hardwood forest, and later around the small lake and cabins of the original land owner. You'll stop at several old moonshining sites. The hike to the mountaintop is gradual, and once you get there you'll see unique vegetation and a glimpse of both Stone Mountain and the Atlanta skyline in the distance. The hike takes between three and four hours. Anyone in moderate condition or better can manage it with ease. Our six year-old completed the walk without complaint. You just have to ensure that children do not step on the fragile lichens on the mountain face. The cost is $10 per person. Check the website for dates and times.

Stately Oaks is an 1839 antebellum house listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its plain Greek Revival architecture is representative of the era in which it was built. It was originally constructed in 1839 by Mr. Whitmill Allen who sold his home to Robert McCord in 1858 and then moved to Tyler, Texas. It is located in Jonesboro, GA., the very city where Scarlett had to pay the taxes on Tara. Even though Tara only existed in Margaret Mitchell's imagination, she placed Tara in Clayton County where she had visited relatives who lived on a large plantation south of Jonesboro. Many of the stories she heard as a child are in the movie. Clayton County is truly home of Gone With the Wind. Also on site, are a one room schoolhouse, a tenant cabin, cook's house, country store, blacksmith shop and Native American Indian Village.
Our guides Colonel Al and Miss Connie were wonderful! Their authentic period clothing and knowledge about the history of the plantation were entertaining as well as educational. Our group had a delicious catered lunch in the one-room schoolhouse. This would be a great place for families, couples, or groups.

And an onsite parking deck immediately adjacent to the aquarium means quick, easy-to-find and affordable parking.
We went during spring break week, so it might not always be like this. But the place was so crowded we didn't really get to enjoy any of the exhibits for being jostled along. I had always heard it was a fabulous aquarium, but I will never visit it again, nor do I recommend anyone try during a typically "busy" week. I bought tickets in advance, because I had heard the number of attendees was regulated. That number should be lowered. I had driven 5 hours with my grandchildren for this attraction and we left after an hour because it was PURE chaos.

The nature that is avalable here is breathtaking. There is a couple ponds, swamps, and lakes around the preserve. There is snakes loose so something to be on the lookout for. There is turtles, swans, ducks, geese, deer, and different birds in the area. Very motivating to take a morning jog around the trail.

If you never been horseback riding before then this is the place for you. They have a person walking along side with each horse. Not ideal if you are not a first time rider. The staff are nice and accommodating and you can tell they love what they do. Very affordable and they have a nice trail.

I visited on a Thursday and I was the only visitor. Richard showed me around and it was so interesting! The museum is run mostly by volunteers and it really deserves more attention. It is rather small but has many interesting exhibits which illustrate aviation history, all kind of artefacts and some very impressive simulators and other training devices (see photos).
You can do it in 1 hour, it cost you 5$ and it is located immediately at the airport.
