Gordon & MacPhail

When James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail announced the opening of their 'centrical and commodious premises' on South Street,Elgin, on 24th May 1895 they would be proud to see it still trading today. Stocking around 1000 different single malt whiskies, the Whisky Room attracts customers from throughout the world. Browsing through the wide selection of whiskies, many of which are very old and extremely rare, is like entering the Aladdin’s Cave of whisky. Please note that the Delicatessen section of the store is currently closed until further notice.

Amanda MacDonald gave us a very warm welcome to her department. Whisky, gin and other lovely selections of rare and unusual alcoholic purchases were available. We were introduced to the Benromach winter gin ‘Red Door’ which was delicious and remained warm in the back of our throats even after leaving the shop. Amanda explained the background and process of the gin extremely well and then informed us about the gin tour which is available at the Benromach Distillery For only £8 entrance fee. Thank you Amanda, I’m sure we will have a great time.

Moray Motor Museum

***Please note: The Motor Museum is only open from Easter Weekend until the end of October and is CLOSED for winter.*** Based in the centre of Elgin (the capital of Morayshire, close to the Cooper Park), Moray Motor Museum is housed in a light and airy old mill building, part of which dates back to the era of the Cathedral when the Bishops of Moray ruled Moravia, and was used by them as a grain mill. The Moray Motor Museum houses a superb collection of veteran, vintage, classic cars and motorbikes. Most of which are on the button ready to go, added to this are the model cars and automobilia which make this a visit not be missed.

This was a great little place to visit and Brian was really informative and advised us on the policies in place to safeguard against Covid and face is information about the cars. There’re are some amazing cars which have achieved highly in events around the world. Our favourite car was the bubble car and my teenage son loved the F4 car. Brian spent time chatting to my teenage son, who we left there to enjoy a longer visit, he’s still talking about the cars and said it was his idea of the best day ever!

Glen Moray Distillery

A warm welcome awaits you at Glen Moray Distillery in Elgin. Glen Moray has been distilled on the banks of the River Lossie since 1897 by a small dedicated team of craftsmen. In over a century of distilling at Glen Moray, much has changed. However, the ingredients, processes and the skills of those responsible for producing this finest quality single malt whisky remain constant. A small, friendly and informal distillery, Glen Moray is situated in the city of Elgin, the historic capital of Speyside. The area around Elgin is known as the Laich of Moray and has a mild climate. Indeed, an old Moray saying proclaims that the Laich of Moray has forty days more summer than any other part of Scotland – making Glen Moray one of the sunniest distilleries in Speyside. The Visitor Centre runs tours of the distillery, tastings of the whiskies available and has a small coffee shop and gift shop.

We've visited Glen Moray several times before, it's one of the best in terms of value for money. This visit was for a lunch and tastings only - due to Covid restrictions, pre-booking is highly recommended. The food and the whisky is of good quality and very well priced. Our party enjoyed a light lunch followed by three different 'flights' of whisky at prices to suit all. Always enjoy a trip to Glen Moray! Good selection of gifts in the shop too.. (Sensible and secure Covid precautions in place, by the way.)

Had a very good tour of the factory. Was a very knowledgeable guide. The work that goes into making a length of cloth amazed us. Can recommend the free tour to all.
