What to do and see in El Congrés i els Indians, Catalonia: The Best Art Galleries

November 4, 2021 Jasper Kershner

Barcelona feels a bit surreal – appropriate, since Salvador Dali spent time here and Spanish Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí designed several of the city’s buildings. Stepping into Gaudí’s Church of the Sacred Family is a bit like falling through the looking glass - a journey that you can continue with a visit to Park Güell. Sip sangria at a sidewalk café in Las Ramblas while watching flamboyant street performers, then create your own moveable feast by floating from tapas bar to tapas bar.

Base Elements Urban Art Gallery

Since opening its doors in 2003, Base Elements has functioned as a multi-faceted gallery- acting as both a workshop and studio- where space and forum collide. There is no doubt that Barcelona is one of the world’s hubs for Graffiti and Street Art. The walls and buildings of the city have become a canvas for both unknown taggers and globally known urban artists. With the concept of providing a literal and figurative canvas for such independent artists, Robert Burt (California native) and his wife Monica Riu (Barcelona Native) founded Base Elements Urban Art Gallery in 2003 with hopes of creating a space where such street artists could not only showcase their talents, but also be embraced as true artists.

If you love graffiti, pop art and contemporary artists then this place is a must visit. This was our second visit to this gallery in the last four years and it didn’t disappoint. The owner was so kind to spend time showing us the incredible collections by talented local artists and we even met a couple during our last visit. We talked art, architecture and politics all surrounding the gallery and it’s contents. Our 10 & 12 year old girls also enjoyed the experience both times. Next time.. we’re not leaving empty handed.

Villa del Arte Galleries

Bert van Zetten, Nemo Jantzen, Marcel and Jutta Huisman founded Villa del Arte Galleries in Barcelona in 1996. Their combined commitment, and passion for art, together with a unique approach and willingness to exhibit some lesser-known artists has contributed to an ever-changing contemporary collection of a consistently high standard. Over time Villa del Arte has developed into one of Catalonia's leading contemporary art galleries. The gallery represents over 30 national and international, established and emerging painters, photographers and sculptors. Villa del Arte remains dedicated to the further development of the Barcelona exhibition space through homegrown projects. Our solo and collective exhibitions are held in our own gallery space and at times in conjunction with the Museu Diocesa (Barcelona). Simultaneous to this we are currently in the process of opening a new and exciting Amsterdam space which will enable us to hold dual and solo exhibitions as well as providing Villa del Arte with greater capabilities to showcase new talent. In 2006 after concentrating our focus on Spain, we participated in our first international art fair. Following this success we have since continued our international trajectory with numerous exhibitions, boutique fairs and renowned art fairs such as Context Art Miami, Art Chicago, Art London, AAF Singapore, AAF NYC, FADA (Los Angeles), St'Art (France), AAF Brussels, Salzburg World Fine Art Fair, Art Hamptons, AF'SH (Holland), Art Palm Beach, Contemporary Istanbul, India Art Fair and Art Toronto. This constant travel provides beneficial opportunities by way of bringing exciting fresh international artists into our collection, whilst simultaneously gaining a close up view of new artistic directions that are then often reflected in the permanent central Barcelona exhibition space.
