Gavilana Permaculture

Concerned with overstepping your ecological footprint? We know that ecosystems can be extracted from regeneratively in order to sustain a human community. We also know it's largely not a common practice in the world, at least not yet. We set up this space to launch a community supported permaculture, a program thanks to which any local and visitor can have an access to free plants, knowledge, a chance to offset his or her ecological footprint, learning hands on opportunity, space to barter/sell produce, medicine garden and much more. Take advantage of our free permaculture excursions, come to get some greens or just simply to connect with like minded people and the land.

Butterfly Conservatory

The Butterfly Conservatory is a Nature Regeneration Project dedicated to the preservation, growth, and study of the rainforest; with focus on butterflies and other tropical rainforest species, such as insects, frogs, lizards, fish, and plants of the Arenal region of Costa Rica. The project has now grown to contain the largest exhibition of butterflies in Costa Rica, and is a learning center for understanding the butterfly life-cycle and incredible Metamorphosis Experience. On this tour visitors will learn about the incredible butterfly life-cycle, and see how we raise these beautiful creatures in our butterfly laboratory. We will also discuss the uniqueness of specific butterflies and plants found flying in each of our 4 ecological habitats. And will also learn about exotic frogs, our botanical gardens and medicinal herb areas, along with our reproduction greenhouses, and then take the rainforest River Walk through primary forest.

Butterfly Conservatory El Castillo We enjoyed our trip here so much that upon return we paired our photos photos of the delicate beauty of butterflies with lyrical imagery imagined by poets from around the world for National Poetry month, which you might be bale to find by searching for Postcard #6 from Costa Rica. After all, as Vladimir Nabokov wrote, “Literature and butterflies are the two sweetest passions known to man.”

Arenal Eco Zoo

We had an awesome time visiting here. The animal keeper Jose gave us a great tour and taught us a lot about all the animals. He was very helpful and made the visit a ton of fun. They are very willing to answer any questions, and to point out all the animals that are sometimes hard to find due to their camouflage. The facility looks small and unassuming, but it is filled with a large variety of snakes, frogs, lizards, and more. It is a great place to learn about the animals, many of which are native to Costa Rica. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who loves seeing and learning about reptiles and other creatures!

5. Finca Las Cataratas

Finca Las Cataratas

Finca Las Cataratas is a place where you can enjoy the wonders of nature by traveling to different waterfalls and trails.
