This is a lovely shop to walk around. It is on several levels with lots of books and crannies and all sorts of gift ideas and ladies clothing. There are toilets and a self service cafe.

Penrith's AWARD WINNING independently owned bookshop in an 18th century building the center of town. Children's books are downstairs (accessible for prams) & grown up books upstairs. The shop is also open on Sundays 11:00 - 4:30 during the summer. We used to have a small vegan coffee shop, but this closed in September 2015 to make room for more books. It had excellent reviews here, so I'm sorry to disappoint fans, but in the end it really wasn't viable and expanding the bookshop made more sense & the book side of the business continues to thrive with a huge amount of local support (for which - thank you everyone!)
Been here a few times for kids books. Always helpful and friendly and very competitively priced for an independent book store. Thankyou

At Orton Farmers' Market over 35 local farmers, growers, producers & artisan craftsmen offer a tremendous variety of high quality and speciality local produce and crafts. What makes Orton special? Orton Farmers' Ltd (which is our trading name) is a member of FARMA and we operate within their guidelines. The market is certified (by annual inspection) with FARMA credentials and run strictly in accordance with the farmers' market principles. Orton Farmers' Market is a third of the Eden Farmers Market Network
We have been using Orton for years, and it never disappoints - not even when it is closed due to Coronavirus. Waking up to this fact late, I placed orders for chicken and lamb on Good Friday and took delivery on Easter Saturday. Delivery AND smiles! Local food, local people, local happiness.... Thank you, team Orton!

Traditional toy shop stocking a wide range of mainly wooden toys. The shop is an Aladdin's Cave of time tested toys some with there origins dating back several century's. The owner is a time served carpenter and joiner and makes many of the toys on display, specialising in Toy Farms, Castles, Dolls Houses, Noah's Arks to mention just a few of the many items on display. See into his workshop through the viewing window in the shop. Bring a 20p coin with you and watch the 'The Toy Works Train' run around the top of the display area.

Unique as one of only four puppet theatres constructed in England, with puppeteers bridges for marionettes and a pit for working rod puppets from below. The site lines are great for children, with all the rows of seats on a steep rake, allowing children to see over adults. All of our productions are written, designed and produced in our own on site workshops, staged with full lighting and musical scores and appeal to all ages. The theatre has an on site cafe and also an on site free entry art gallery with shop. Tables can be reserved in the cafe for groups visiting the puppet theatre and a children's menu is offered. We were awarded the Readers Choice Culture Award from Cumbria Life Magazine this year for our venue and last year won the "Sustainable Tourism Award" from Cumbria Tourist board for our"Eco" buildings and sound green business ethic. Many of our audience members have returned year after year to see our performances and after show meet the puppet sessions for photographs.
We saw Puss in Boots with our 6 year old. She was enthralled through. Wonderful production, and it's great that the children can ask questions and see the puppets at the end. Would highly recommend.

We were married on Sunday the 1st of November and spent the Monday buying sun cream and Mosquito repellent for our honeymoon the next day Sadly that same night our honeymoon was cancelled so we hastily made a few calls and booked the lakes Whilst there we discovered “ The toffee shop “ And what intrigued me was a shop that just sold toffee If you have a shop that just sells toffee you need to make sure it’s the best toffee that is around Well..... As it happens they don’t only just make toffee they also make fudge , but the toffee is simply out of this world and staff are wonderfully friendly as well It really is good enough for a shop all of its its own We all know another brand of toffee , which I have purchased in the past ,this toffee is simply in a different league and is streets ahead . It’s brave to have a small independent shop selling just two products in todays economic climate So do them and yourself a favour and drive up or go online and try this delightful treat You will not be disappointed

With around 400 different gins and an eclectic mix of wines, beers, spirits, food and drink, Chestnut House is fast becoming the place to shop in Cumbria and The Lakes
Probably the best selection of deli style foods, beers, wines & spirits I've ever seen in such a compact store. Owners & staff super friendly and absolutely know their stuff, and stock some stunning local produce and lots more - if you like gin then this will be your 'Gin Nirvana' and I'd highly recommend you pay them and the lovely little village that is Pooley Bridge a visit - definitely on my list next time I'm over that way

We were staying at a Hotel a few miles away, got talking to a couple, they told us about this wonderful Chocolate Factory with a cafe at Orton, so next day we went, lovely little village, and the Chocolate shop was fantastic, I m allergic to all dairy products, so you can imagine my delight to find hand made chocolates I can enjoy.????, we had a coffee, with chocolate medallions on a plate, and then had soup and a sandwich. They lady who served us made doubly sure that nothing had dairy in it. Lovely friendly staff. There is a viewing window to see the chocolates being made, but no tours through the factory, which is really good health and safety regulations. I brought a great selection of chocolate and a leaflet home with me and have since placed 2 orders, for chocolates, for Xmas presents for friends. AND some dairy free ones for myself????????. Many thanks Kennedy’s.

This gallery is a delight. Full of lovely things including art work, pottery and books. It was an unexpected find and a source of joy. The owner (?) is a kind and informative man. I wish I had had more time to peruse everything and then have coffee and cake.

One of the foremost galleries in the North West. Internationally known names exhibit alongside those who are showing for the first time, making sure the gallery never stands still
We were spending a few days in the Lake District, one of which was spent touring in and around Penrith. We found out about the gallery and, in the current circumstances, emailed in advance to find out if it was open and what artists would be on show, to which we received a most helpful reply. The Gallery is part of a complex which includes the Larch Cottage Nurseries, with its amazing collection of plants, shrubs and sculptures for sale and a restaurant. During limited periods in the summer, the private gardens are open - something to plan for a future visit. The Gallery had an excellent selection of art and artists on show, all for sale, some remarkably affordable, with a car park just across the road, and is well worth a visit if you are in the area.
