Painfully Amazing and totally worthwhile. This is an important historical reminder of the tragedy of the Nazis, a work camp consisting of several tunnels dug into the side of this huge mountain, all apparently quite wide with high ceilings and interconnected. Inside, slave labor from Italy, Jews from various countries, Spaniards and Roma (gypsies) were all subjected to long days with little food and a cold, cold work environment. Inside, the Nazi genius Werner von Braun (who later was "rewarded" by the US and made chief developer of the US space program) had a rocket building factory. In another chamber was a petroleum refinery. Nearby, outside were barracks and a crematorium for workers who didn't survive. Today, the nearby area has been covered with nice suburban style housing with flower-filled backyards where the crematorium and barracks once stood, but were dismantled and erased immediately after the end of WWII. The area inside that's available to visitors is quite limited, but it has a story to tell all of mankind. This location is surprisingly accessible round-trip by local town bus service which runs about every 30 minutes from the train station.

We walked up the mountain with our 7 month old in the backpack, the path starts out with steep stairs and continues on a steep gradient passing through the woods for the first 2/3 of the walk. Further up there is less cover, towards the top the gradient is less. A very nice but steep walk with the reward of good food and drinks, not forgetting the views at the top! 1100m height-meters, Bring good footwear!

I always very much enjoy coming to those lakes. They are surrounded by mountains and are simply a beautiful sight in general. There is an easy trail that leads around both lakes (~7km) but you can also just walk around the first lake as well (~3km). The parking space is also a starting point for many beautiful and great hikes and for me personally it's a great place to do a hike and then return back to the lake to take a swim and cool myself off a bit. Also just for swimming I very much like it here. The water quality is great and the temperature is quite refreshing though not too cold; at least for my taste. I can definitely recommend to come there.
