On the 9th of April 1940, German troops landed in Norway. We were at war, and the battle to avoid invasion lasted for two months. The german army reached Gudbrandsdalen 21st of April 1940 with the battle of Tretten and Gausdal. On the 25th and 26th of April, Kvam in Gudbrandsdalen became the centre of one of the most serious battles in southern Norway. During this bitter fight between German and British troops, some 70 buildings were burned to the ground and among them was the church in Kvam. Gudbrandsdalen 1940 was the first ground battle between German and British forces in WW2. The Battle of Kringen on the 26th of August 1612, involved an ambush by Norwegian peasant militia of Scottish mercenary soldiers who were on their way to enlist in the Swedish army for the Kalmar War. George Sinclair was ambushed by Norwegian militia along with 300 of his men while marching through Norway to join the army of the Swedish king Gustavus Adolphus. Sinclair, riding at the head of the column and wearing a plumed helmet, was the first to fall; he was shot by Sjelstad, a Norwegian militiaman. The officers, including the expedition leader, Colonel Ramsey, were ransomed while the remaining 15 survivors were conscripted into the Danish army. These are the historic events on which the Gudbrandsdal War Memorial Exhibition is based. The exhibition opened on the 5th of May 1995, and provides a unique insight into the acts of war, occupation and defence in Gudbrandsdalen.

This was an excellent museum and a great history lesson regarding the Norwegian resistance during WWII. There is a lot of reading. You must put in the effort to learn. It is well worth it. The amount of artifacts that were preserved were amazing, such as smuggled letters and secret resistance correspondence. You may think you know everything about WWII, but come here and you will learn more. Norway definitely put up a fight to help preserve the rights of people all over Europe. Very impressive exhibit. We spent 2 hours here. The museum is a small building inside the Akershus Fortress. Entrance fee was covered by the Oslo Pass.

This is a free entry museum located close to the Askerhus Castle. When we entered on the ground floor we thought that it was a small museum detailing the various campaigns in which the Norwegian armed forces participated. Then we walked up to the first floor. There unfolded a vast, detailed exhibition of all the conflicts that Norway was involved in - starting from the Vikings, through the numerous wars with Sweden right up to the Second World war and beyond. Each section of the exhibition displays numerous artifacts and information.

I brought my senior leaders to this excellent museum in Horten, for a two hours guided tour in maritime history. The guide service was excellent! Eventhough I have served a lot of years in the Navy, there are always something new to learn. We finished the tour on board the submarine (Ex HNoMS Utstein). This is a place you must visit!

Oscarsborg museum offers exhibitions and guided tours all year around. It is located in the main Fortress at Oscarsborg, which played a key role during the nazist's invasion on April 9th 1940. Today Oscarsborg is a popular destination for families and others, due to the history, the beautiful scenery, art galleries, restaurants, concerts and the close location to the nice little city Drøbak.
See the movie "The Kings choice" or in Norwegian / Danish "Kongens Nei/nej" and you will know the story from the 9th of april 1940, when the fortress sunk the big german cruiser "Blücher" with the fortresses ancient guns and torpedoes. So interesting
