Priory Meadow is an excellent small shopping centre with c.50 shops, it is well lit and has a nice friendly atmosphere. So much of Hastings is run-down, but not Priory Meadow (in fact I would say that is has a lot less vacant units than the majority of UK shopping centres). For 125 years Priory Meadow was a county cricket ground (1864 to 1989), but Hastings town centre was very short of shops, so was redeveloped into the current shopping centre which opened in 1997. This history of Priory Meadow is reflected by a statue of a batsman (The Spirit of Cricket by Allan Sly). Apparently the ball, hit by the batsman, can be seen in the wall above F. Hinds jewellers.

What a difference and what an improvement this huge extension has made to the main Shopping Mall in the town centre. Lots of new retailers and more to come in the next few months. When everything, including outside in the streets, is finished, Eastbourne will surely be the place to come shopping as well as to visit its new cinema complex contained within the Beacon.
