This theatre/opera house is a delight for the senses. They show a variety of world-class shows, such as Billy Elliott, South Pacific, and Camelot, in a truly gorgeous building that really adds to the overall experience. The building has existed since the mid-19th century, and you can feel the history of some of the shows that originated here, like Man of La Mancha. The acting/singing and the orchestra are consistently superb, which is really a testament to the theatre that it can attract such high-quality talent. It's set right in the heart of East Haddam, next to the Gelston House restaurant (great for a pre-show meal) and right on the scenic Connecticut River. Devils' Hopyard State Park and Gillette Castle State Park are both nearby.

If you like an outdoor adventure combined with a trip through the past. This was a great visit. The outdoor park has a number of trails to walk. you could spend as little as an hour or the whole day just walking the trails. The Gillette Castle itself is a wonder to visit. the unique architecture and history if fascinating. I loved all the personalized rooms he had created. We also took a ride on the Essex Train and River Boat. This gave a great view of the castle from the River. a unique view, you cannot get anywhere else.

Devil's Hopyard State Park

Reviewed By DrLiz - Farmington, United States

The trails may be a little rocky, and in some spots steep, but the yellows and oranges kept the beauty ablaze!! It was unseasonably warm today, so there were many people about— Notable in that this place is not on a main drag, it clearly takes some driving on numerous hidden back roads to get here. However, it was well worth the ride I enjoy the hiking, so the state park is well worth the miles and miles of trails through the hills you could take. If you’re just there to see the falls, for the less adventurous, you could park at the side of the road and look over the fence to see them— breathtakingly gorgeous! Or park, and walk for hours. Lots and lots of places to picnic, and Porta potties are available near the parking areas. There’s also a campsite for those who intend to stay. For me, the only part that was somewhat disappointing, is there is no monument or homage paid to the historic significance of the area. I would like to have had the exact location of the mill, or of the Battle with the British indicated somewhere. Still, a lovely place to land
