Dungarvan (Irish: Dún Garbhán, meaning "Garbhann's Fort") is a coastal town and harbour in County Waterford, on the south coast of Ireland. Prior to the merger of Waterford County Council with Waterford City Council in 2014, Dungarvan was the county town and administrative centre of County Waterford. Waterford City and County Council retains administrative offices in the town. The town's Irish name means "Garbhann's fort", referring to Saint Garbhann who founded a church there in the seventh century. The town lies on the N25 road (European route E30), which connects Cork, Waterford and Rosslare Europort.

Dungarvan Castle, situated overlooking the harbour of the town, is operated by the Office of Public Works. The castle is unusual in Ireland with its shell keep dating to the 12th-century (such keeps are more common in England). Inside the walls of the castle is a two-storey military barracks which is now an exhibition space that covers the centuries of history to inhabit the confines of this fine structure. There is a superb audio-visual presentation which outlines the history of the castle from the time of Prince John in 1185 to its use by the Garda Siochana until 1987. There are some beautiful water-colour paintings by local historian Willie Fraher which capture the various angles of the site over the course of the changing seasons. One can enter an impressively restored tower and the entrance to the castle is picture postcard in its dominating presence of the area. The staff at Dungarvan Castle were extremely informative and very helpful. Charlotte was great explaining to me the work of the OPW . I was very fortunate to receive a guided tour of the Castle by Charlotte's colleague Peigi who really brought the history of Dungarvan Castle to life. She was skilled and engaging in pointing out features of the Castle which may be missed until further inspection but was able to explain their significance in a most interesting way. It really was a tour for all ages that captured the imaginations of the kids there as well as holding the attention of all adults. I would strongly recommend taking a tour of the site as to discover some of the hidden history such as a garden which was situated in the confines of the castle previously or the use of blackcurrant bushes in maintaining the integrity of the quay wall. Well done to Peigi on an excellent tour. Most definitely one of the best tour guides that I have encountered! I really can't commend the staff enough at the Castle! They were extremely friendly and were great for recommendations for food and other interesting things to do in Dungarvan. Dungarvan Castle is well-worth a visit and tour. It would be a perfect visit for anyone cycling the Waterford Greenway and caters for all the family. There's enough there to keep adults happy and space for kids to roam and explore. There are great views of the harbour and enough interesting viewpoints for keen photographers. Thanks to Charlotte and Peigi for bringing the Castle to life!
