Maallust is a micro-brewery inside the wheat mill of the former Veenhuizen prison. They are active since 2011 and their popular craft beers have befitting names such as “Zware Jongen”. There is also a tasting room right next to the brewery. You can book tours including tasting of the beers, optionally with cheese from the neighboring artisanal cheese factory. Together with the new artisanal snackbar also next door, quite an attractive destination for a culinary expedition!

The National Park Drentsche Aa was created because it largely escaped from areal redistribution efforts and hence is still a very historical landscape. It has several small rivers, nature areas, small scale farming and even prehistorical funeral monuments built of large boulders. Great area for cycling or hiking!

The flock of Balloo roams the Ballooërveld nature reserve, an extensive area mostly covered by heather. The sheep are accompanied by the (female) shepherd and dog. It is fun to watch the sheep and lambs cross the bicycle path!

Sometimes there are moments that last. An initial ordinary day suddenly as a warm reminder nestles in memory. Visiting gallery Wildevuur in the Drenthe Hooghalen can be such a moment. Granted, the location - the vast estate Hiemstra State - in one word called idyllic. And yes, the manor in which the gallery is situated is one of the most beautiful national monuments , and paragons of the Amsterdam School, the Netherlands. But above all it 's impressive collection of figurative art that makes the memorable introduction. Welcome !

Kaaslust is a cheese factory and shop right next to the Maallust microbrewery on the former Veenhuizen prison colony. They sell and unbelievably intense, hard, old Sheep cheese which is unlike any other cheese you ever tasted. Fantastic with a glass of port or Zware Jongen tripel beer from Maallust!
