What to do and see in Downtown, Newfoundland: The Best Sights & Landmarks

May 17, 2022 Major Galusha

Looking out over the city of St. John's, you may be reminded of a mini San Francisco (minus the cable cars). St. John's provides the ideal balance between nature and nightlife, from the East Coast Trail and its stunning scenery to the colorful entertainment district along George Street. Although it's the largest city in Newfoundland, the vibe is still very small-town. You'll feel welcome in the City of Legends!

St. Thomas' Church

Reviewed By CollinsFamilyNL

It was amazing that a wooden church built in 1836 survived great fires and storms. The vision of this church is to be an Enduring Beacon, and it certainly is. The pews are from early 1800's and still have painted number plates on them as pews were once rented by families based on their size, and some families have used the same family pew for many generations (although renting of pews ended many years ago). The stain glass windows also have history and the one on the altar is in memory of the same child as the statue in Bowering Park. I was fascinated with this beautiful church, its architecture, and history. I also recommend visiting Commissariat House located directly behind the church, which also served as the church rectory for many years. There is also no charge for tours which is a nice bonus, but we did leave a donation after being so impressed by our tour guide.

I loved driving and walking through the village of "jelly bean houses" --- It is a must see because every picture of NL contains the images--- Color and Connection, so remarkably the trademark of the St. John's people!

Great street with live music happening and plenty of restaurants to choose from. The street wasn't as long as I expected but lots of activity as you walk along. Every city should have a George Street! Must do if you are in St.Johns.
