Founded in 1999 by Brothers Charlie and Ed Shelton, Shelton Vineyards was envisioned as a new agricultural resource for an area once dependent on tobacco farming. Located in the heart of North Carolina's Yadkin Valley, Shelton Vineyards is 180 degrees from any winery you will find on the West Coast. The distinctive characteristics of Shelton wine come from the unique soil and climate of the Yadkin Valley. This helps give Shelton wine an inimitable taste that holds its own against any wine from any area in the world. We invite you to visit us, try our wine and see if you agree that our wine is as unique as the area we are in.
Breathtaking scenery and grounds, a rather spectacular tasting room and great wines. And when you add in an on-site restaurant that is on my list of places to eat every time I’m in the area, you need to visits Shelton. Plus, a nearby Hampton Inn and another restaurant owned by them makes this the best spot for ending or starting you wine tour.

Stony Knoll Vineyards is steeped in history, with roots running deep, much like the vines that now line our fields. This North Carolina Century Farm began back in 1896 when the ancestors of Kathy Coe bought a tract of land in Southern Surry County. The farm was a means of survival, in a time when nothing came easy. In the early 1940’s the vineyard area was cleared with hand tools and domesticated animals and put into cultivation. During this time, tobacco was the claimed cash crop. This caused an immense effort to care for the land and give back to it, much as it was giving to the family. Tobacco remained dominant until the early 1980’s. The farm remained in production, but switching from tobacco to cattle and hay. Then in the late 1990’s, Van Coe had a dream of putting the farm into a new cultivation, with the driving force being future preservation into a family vineyard & winery. In April of 2001, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Niagara, Syrah were born.
Not only is the winery located on the sight of a very large former dairy farm, they have a very charming 1800’s cabin on site. The owner/winemaker led out tasting, and was very happy to discuss his views on each gape variety used, how he came to make each wine, etc. I will definitely return. And do NOT miss tasting the dessert wines!

Nothing pretentious. Just a wonderful welcome, a tasty sandwich, and that longed for Southern tradition a fried apple pie. All the candy dear to the Southern heart - a, OH! cold drinks in bottles! If you love history and that magical Yadkin River, stop in for a taste of our past.

So we visit a lot o wineries definitely our hobby. Decided our last weekend off for a while to visit diene nc vineyards that we have not been to. Drove in to Hutton a little after noon on Sunday and met one in the owners walking down the road He engaged us asking if we wanted to pick grapes and you know I will definitely go back and do that We went to the tasting room and he opened a bottle and told us to pour our own. We took a normal amount and he gave us some grief, he said we should have taken more. But we Had some other places to go. It was one of those once in a lifetime experiences. He had great stories Truly passionate about winemaking and great life stories We will definitely go back
