A large island, approximately 20 by 20 kilometers, Djerba lies just off the northeastern coast of Africa, in southeastern Tunisia, near the Libyan border. Set on the Gulf of Gabes, the island is known for an eclectic population of residents and tourists, splendid beaches and picturesque villages that feature distinctive, square, whitewashed houses. Houmt Souq is the one large town, with bustling markets and lively outdoor cafes. Djerba, which offers a pirate's castle and fortress-like mosques, is believed to have been the inspiration for Homer's Odyssey. Accessible from the south of Tunisia, a road originally built by the Romans connects the island to the mainland.

Welcome to Zitouna Stables. We organise riding holidays and equestrian tours on the beautiful Tunisian beaches and through the calm olive orchards, ancient ruins and old villages of Djerba island. Our stables are situated near the village of Mezraya and near the 'Flamingo Island', an 8km long peninsula of amazing beaches. The really unique thing about our stables is that all our stallions live in couples on the paddocks, where they can play with each other instead of being attached or always closed in a box. We have a sportive riding style and only accept experienced riders with a maximum weight of 85 kilos.

Beat all my expectations - for horse lovers this is a must-do! Martine's horses are top quality, very well looked after, beautiful animals. She took us on a fantastic afternoon ride on the beach, on two stunning stallions and a calmer gelding. I will definitely go back and stay for longer. Not for inexperienced riders, but if you want to see incredible scenery on quality horses, this is a visit of a lifetime!
