Orkeny Theatre

When arriving through a huge arch, and watch this theatre from outside, you expect something large, according to the columnar entrance, even monumental. In the lobby, you still can think that there are long rows of chairs waiting for you, only after a few stairs - if you have a ticket to the balcony, you have fought yourself up quite a few stairs - you will be surprised to find that there is only a small auditorium for the big stage. I was lucky last night at the István Örkény Theater to see the Shaxpearre washer of Kertész street. It was a hard job to get tickets. It was a modern, very modern Romeo and Juliett story, where the youngsters are all more or less drog addicts, drinking cursing and everyone are having a promiscuous life. On weekend evenings on the streets of Budapest, something very similar can be seen as was on the stage. When I heard, that some people found it too much and left, I was thinking, what can they do in real life? Escape? Stay behind the walls of their home? Immigrate? Like it or not, that is the reality. Behind the rough, rambunctious behavior, is often a gentle soul is hiding. Shouting, swearing is just the surface, that the young fellow uses to cover up his feelings with. It was a phenomenal performance that we are used to from the Örkény theater team. Although I enjoyed every minute of the show, at home I did watch Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet for a bit. Just for the sake of contrast.

Bethlen Theater

Bethlen Theatre ...where past meets present In the outer part of the 7th district of Budapest, at Bethlen Gabor square is where our tiny theater is located. In 2012, it was re-named as Bethlen Theatre – the same name it had before it was closed in 1937. The change of name went hand in hand with a change of profile: before the reopening, the place functioned as a dance theater for more than 15 years; since then it is a production theater. Its objective is to revive by the efficient help of contemporary art, young artists and performers without genre limitations. The programs here are organised on the basis of art community. The four pillars – prose and dance performances, children plays and comedy – have been extended with genres, such as visual theatre, impromptu theatre and folk performances. Festivals, contemporary dance and theater performances, Sunday plays for children, free screenings, and exhibitions at the Gallery await the audience every month.

Amazing Metal Art Gallery

Welcome in the Steel Figure Gallery, the only tourist attraction in the world, where you can find sculptures inspired by characters from cartoons, science fiction movies, animals and sculptures inspired by the most expensive hits of the automotive world. Recently traveled to Budapest and discovered this fabulous collection of connected courtyards filled with great restaurants, fun bars and interesting shops. This is the hippest spot in town filled with tourists and locals alike, housed in the old Jewish Quarter and open until the wee hours of the night. Such a variety of excellent food and music it was hard to decide which to choose. Wish we had more time to try them all !

Postal Stamp Museum Budapest

The museum was opened to the public in 1930, on the ninth floor of the building of General Postal Direction on Krisztina Road. The collection soon outgrew its place, and was moved into the first 20th century architectural heritage monument in Hungary, the newly completed post office in the 7th district, designed by Gyula Rimanóczy, in 1939. The exhibition hall is one enormous space, resembling rather a library, for the stamps are placed in metal-framed glass plates fitting in cases mounted in the wall, in order to protect them from heat, light and moisture. 3200 such frames in the exhibition hall contains the nearly 500 thousand artistic stamps that make up the permanent exhibition with the title The History of the World on Stamps. In fact, the museum has a much bigger collection of more than 13 million Hungarian and foreign stamps, stamp designs etc. The museum has a special library, supporting researchers’ work as well with its handbooks and journals.

It's one of my favorite theaters. No wonder I've been there so many times, I'm a regular there. The acting is fantastic, the sound system is very good, I've always had the time of my life when I came out at the end of the show. My favorite show has been The phantom of the opera so far, especially with Sasvári Sándor as the phantom. They always use English subtitles during the shows, so foreigners can enjoy them too. I recommend it a lot.

The synagogue was built in the secession style and was in a bad state of disrepair during the communist period. It has now been beautifully restored and is well worth a visit. It is not as large as the main synagogue (nor as busy) but the unusual combination of secession style and Orthodox Judaism makes it unique. Don't miss it if you are in the Jewish quarter.

Szimpla Sunday Farmers' Market

Szimpla Farmers' Market: market, brunch and community place. The market has been organized every Sunday in Szimpla since 2012. Every week we have approximately 1500-2000 local and international visitors and 30-40 farmers, mainly from the proximity of Budapest, offering their own produces. Our farmers must meet very strict requirements, our staff regularly checks how the products are made at the farms. Our vendors offer cheese, sausage, fruits, vegetables, spreads, honey, chutneys, juices, organic and non-organic, yet small farm produced delicacies in a great variety. On our first floor we offer an all you can eat brunch from the produces of the market. We have live music, and every week a different NGO cooks and raises money for charity, where you can taste what they have cooked for donations.

We enjoyed a Sunday visit as this is the only day this cute little market is open till 2:00PM. Lots of interesting products such as meats, cheeses, bakery items, homemade sauces and jams plus local beverages, too. Just a bit east of the Jewish district. Worth experiencing if you're here.

This was not on our list of things to do while in Budapest for 3 days but a friend of a friend said it was a must see, so off we went despite negative online reviews of snobby waiters and long lines. We were there in the off season in November and went about 11am and had no problem getting a table immediately and our waiter was perfectly fine without any snobbery. The interior is absolutely breathtaking with beautiful intricate details from that late 1800s beaux arts era. We did get sticker shock at the prices for just a coffee and pastries but there was live music to set the tone (at first a pianist and while he on break they had other live music with local instruments that was also cool) and we were there for the ambiance so felt we got our money's worth. It was an absolutely lovely venue and do recommend.
