Having endured 20 years of struggle for independence from Indonesia, East Timor's coastal capital, Dili, has made remarkable strides toward reconstruction after innumerable damages and losses. Its former Portuguese colonial flavor can still be found in remaining villas and churches along the waterfront, as well as the 65-foot statue of Jesus overlooking the coast, reminiscent of Cristo Redentor in Rio Di Janeiro. The waterfront parks and white sand beaches are popular for diving and relaxing.

Totally worth spending an hour to learn about the Timorese struggle for independence. Very well arranged, although more English language explanatory notes would be helpful. Tickets available at the gate at USD1.00. No photography inside allowed

You can't leave Timor without owning some of their local textiles, the Tais Market has the best selection.

Over 230 young people were massacred by Indonesian Militia near here, those that were left injured were taken to the hospital where the Indonesians murdered those as well. Reviewing the names and ages of those buried here made my skin crawl, such a senseless waste.

A very beautiful church both outside and inside, amazing colourful stain glass windows, very high ceilings making my jaw drop onto the floor. Love coming here with my special girl to pray together for a world full of love and peace ????????
