Derry (/ˈdɛri/), officially Londonderry (/ˈlʌndənˌdɛri/), is the second-largest city in Northern Ireland and the fourth-largest city on the island of Ireland. The name Derry is an anglicisation of the Old Irish name Daire (modern Irish: Doire) meaning "oak grove". In 1613, the city was granted a Royal Charter by King James I and gained the "London" prefix to reflect the funding of its construction by the London guilds. While the city is more usually known colloquially as Derry, Londonderry is also commonly used and remains the legal name.

Our family of four spent a wonderful week in Ireland and Northern Ireland in early September as part of a cultural tour from Delectable Destinations. Red Walker and ECS Travel were a huge part of what made this trip so outstanding. Informative...professional...safety first...Red became an integral part of our tour from Dublin to Rathmullan, Donegal, Slieve League, Fanad Peninsula, Derry, Giants Causeway, and over to Belfast. And when one of Red's passenger vans had mechanical issues, he and his wife Deirdre showed up with two vehicles to get us around! We all learned so much from both Red and Deirdre and felt like they became instant friends. This was simply the best way to tour the Emerald Isle!!

Hi I was born and raised in Derry’s Bogside and one of the city’s longest established tour-guides and resident red head! I’m an accredited guide with 19 years’ experience and have had the opportunity to guide thousands of visitors around my beautiful city and throughout the north of Ireland. This is not just a job to me, my biggest passion is home. I love to talk about this place and share what our great country has to offer. “Tá grá agam don teanga.” I love the Irish Language! I’m a fluent Irish speaker and was one of the first generation of children to be educated through the medium of Irish in the city during the modern language revival in the North of Ireland. I have a great love and passion for Gaelic culture and my tours usually end up in a seisiún or two! My tours focus on our countries history, culture, and politics but I also put across my own personal experience having grown up during “the troubles” in the north of Ireland.

Majestic, neo-Gothic Church of Ireland (Anglican) Cathedral, built between 1628 and 1633. St. Columb's is the oldest and most historic building within the walled City of Londonderry. It has recently been extensively restored. The Chapter House Museum displays artefacts from the Siege of Londonderry in 1689 and also many other interesting items. There is an audio visual display which tells the visitor the history of the Cathedral and there are guide leaflets available in 8 Languages. Admission is free - donations are welcome.
The oldest building in Derry it has much history. It was from this church that Alexander's Hymns emanates. Mrs Alexander was wife of a minister here and started writing children's songs and eventually hymns which have become part of Protestant Church hymnody for over a century. The building is grand with a historic section where photos are not allowed

A museum explaining the political conflict that has shaped the city and the country: a must for those unfamiliar with Northern Ireland's war-torn past.
The museum is very interesting and outstandingly good value. Take time to watch he 15 min film at the end as it bought everything together and was very informative. The free exhibition at the start is good too.

This monument was especially poignant since the first victim's name was the father of our tour guide that morning.

Spotted this church on our walk around the city walls. Beautiful from the outside. Plaque outside giving a bit of details of the church. We weren't inside so cannot comment on that.
