Derby's Norval Gallery is run by a Kimberley artist husband and wife team Mark and Mary Norval. The gallery showcases their own insightful work as well as the artwork of many indigenous artists from the amazing Kimberley region of Western Australia. All of the artists are happy to talk about their unique artwork and are willing to share their painting techniques and ideas whilst being watched at work by visitors to the gallery. Other must see highlights of the gallery include, Australia's best historical carved Boab Nut display, an extensive collection of rare and beautiful sea shells and locally designed Boab tree inspired jewellery. For the music buffs there is a collection of 5000 of the best LPs ever recorded. The Lonely Planet Australian travel guide for 2012 rated Norval Gallery as one of its top 60 "top choice must see" destinations Australia wide. The gallery is closed during the months of November December and January
What an amazing gallery and what wonderful people involved. Could not believe how accomodating and friendly everyone was, the most amazing art ever and Mark himself very happy to chat and discuss his history and activities within the local community. He is so obliging to the local indigenous community and they are just a wonderful family all around.. (Adds to the wonder that he supports Geelong in the AFL as well-Go cats)

Stopped along the way & hiked in to see Galvan's gorge and have lunch. Luckily the couple we were traveling with had done some research and heard there was Aboriginal art here.. it is tucked away for sure and requires some climbing over rocks around the back of the gorge but yep - it's there! An amazing find and so very special to be able to walk up and see it closely. The gorge is so peaceful - wonderful spot for lunch!

The Derby Visitor Centre can tell you all there is to know about Derby including 'things to see and do' tours to experience, explore the history or just sit back and relax. We visited the Derby visitor centre twice during our time in Derby and both times the staff could not have been more helpful. Very proud of their town and the beautiful surrounding area, and very knowledgable. They have some lovely gifts and a good selection of books. Well worth a visit if you are in the area

The first wharf, built in 1894, was a wooden T shaped structure located at the northern end of the present steel and concrete jetty. The Jetty is a popular place from which to view the stunning sunsets over King Sound or to fish for silver cobbler, shark, golden grunter, north west salmon and mud crabs on the incoming tides. These tides are Australia's highest and the second highest in the southern hemisphere.
My wife and I sat and enjoyed watching the amazing sunset from the wharf. A brilliant photo opportunity. The tides in Derby are huge and watching the roiling water as the tide comes in is an experience

Beautiful & very Old Prison Boab tree with so many years of history! There others in the area just as beautiful but not as big. The police use to house the Aboriginal & other criminals in this one! Most part of the tree is edible. They grow to about 15mtr tall & their girth can reach 20mtrs The seeds are as big & shaped like mangos. They can be more than 1000-1500years old. Also near by is one of the longest Cattle water troph in Australia at 140 feet long. Must visit.
