I was driving the Mohawk Trail as part of a long drive but I'd read about HIstoric Deerfield and wanted to visit but the guide books did little to prepare me for just how amazing this place is! It really is like stepping back in history a few hunderd years. Simply stunnig. Sadly, I had very little time so just drove slowly through town and stopped to take a few photos before having to leave - I would have loved to spend much longer here to visit some of the museums and just to wander around taking in the atmosphere. This place is an amazing step back in time and is really worth setting aside some time to visit.

Williams Farm Sugarhouse

Reviewed By LUBY3298 - Harvard, United States

We took an adventure with our brother/sister in-laws our to western Mass and stopped at Williams Farms for brunch. The people were all incredibly nice and even gave us a quick tour/view into the maple sugar works, which were very cool. They were very kind to answer questions. Love the tradition of making sugar from maple sap. We all ordered different things, I got a French toast and a whole wheat blueberry pancake. My wife got regular pancakes. Our in-laws got regular blueberry pancakes. We were served very quickly after placing our orders. It’s sort of family style, place your order at GE counter and get your beverages and utensils. We luckily got a great seat, and the good came shortly. Portions were very generous, as we were all very satisfied. The maple syrup was outstanding, rich dark color, and plenty sweet. We decided to try a specialty there called sugar on snow. They bring you some special maple syrup that’s been cooked to exactly the right temperature so it still pours. With the syrup they brought a bowl of shaved ice. One of the family showed us how to enjoy it. You pour just a little bit over top the ice and it hardens to like taffy consistency. Then you girl a little bit off and enjoy! It’s super sweet so you only want to pour it in small spots. They also bring you a small cup of deliciously tart dill pickles to take the edge off the sweetness. All in all, it’s a great place for breakfast or early brunch, and well worth the trip. It’s a short hop off I-91 and it’s right on Route 5 in Deerfield, MA. They only run during the late-winter early-spring during sugar season, so check the website for hours. I’d definitely stop again when next we’re out western Massachusetts again.
