Debrecen (Hungarian pronunciation: [ˈdɛbrɛt͡sɛn] ( listen)) is Hungary's second largest city after Budapest. It is the regional centre of the Northern Great Plain region and the seat of Hajdú-Bihar county. It was the largest Hungarian city in the 18th century and it is one of the Hungarian people's most important cultural centres. Debrecen was also the capital city of Hungary during the revolution in 1848–1849. During the revolution, the dethronement of the Habsburg dynasty was declared in the Reformed Great Church. The city also served as the capital of Hungary by the end of the World War II in 1944–1945. It is home of the University of Debrecen.

The main building of the University of Debrecen was built bw 1927 – 1932. When inaugurated this was the third biggest building in Hungary after the Parliament and the Castle of Buda (both to be found in the capital). It is really monumental and still serves as the home of numerous University Departments and other establishments. Its central court, a multi-storey, glass-covered atrium is a unique sight and impresses the visitor being an internationally relevant architectural gem. It is home to the regular doctoral degree award ceremonies and other celebrations. It is worth just to take a stroll within the building, or around at the carefully manicured park. You are free to discover the many adjacent old or new buildings of one of Europe’s nicest university campus.

They have a cafe/ restaurant inside and the food was decent.

As you enter the downtown area of Debrecen it is massive and impossible to miss. It is the largest Protestant Church in Hungary and it has the largest Bell of the Protestant Churches in Hungary. That is why Debrecen is called the Calvinist Rome. There were several churches which were destroyed, one before the present church burned during the Great Fire that destroyed Debrecen in 1802 and the construction of this Great Church started in 1805. The capacity is for 5000 people. The towers are 61 meters high. It is worth visiting.

Its a small museum with large selection of historical equipments. In the first section you can find ancient peoples life which they lived in debrecen and hajdu bihar country. You can find artifacts from japanese culture to ottoman empire. It costs 900 forints for students and its definetely worth it.
