Old Taipei City was once surrounded by walls, which were demolished during the Japanese colonial period (1895 - 1945). Most of the gates remain. The East Gate has been restored recently, it is quite magnificent. It's at the corner of Ketagalan Boulevard and Chung Shan South Road. it's a busy intersection, you may have to view East Gate from a distance. This is a prime area for important institutions, including the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, which is close by, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).
