I have fished and hiked this park for many years. I got to go to the new education building while taking the Master Naturalist class through the U of I. A great facility. We were studying aquatic life in the river there. Found many species of mayflies, some caddis and others..indicators of a fairly heathy river. Keep up the good work!

A ravaged strip-mine site was converted into a densely forested state park.
Somehow we didn't notice that interstate 74 goes through the park less than a mile from the campgrounds. We noticed the noise when selecting a site in tent campground (noise could be heard in all 3 campgrounds) but thought it wasn't too bad. We hoped that the crickets and cicadas calling at night would drown it out. Wrong! the still cool air after sundown seem to amplify the sound.Earplugs cut the insect noise with seemingly little effect on semi truck roar. The same was true of pillow and sleeping bag over ears. We decided to move on and forfeit the fees for 3 nights that we had already paid.
We did enjoy a 4 hour canoe trip on the Middle Fork. Water was high after recent rain making easy canoeing over rocks and sandbars. It was mid week so we saw only one other person between launch and get out point. Many interesting steep banks, small sandy areas we could stretch our legs at, huge sycamore trees, wooded banks the whole way, king fishers and herons. Much of the trip was north of the park and free of the freeway hum. Unfortunately this was the final week (9/18/16) for the canoe outfitters. So be sure to call next season (2017) to see if new one is available if canoeing is your goal.

When you live nearby, you often dismiss the local attractions. That would be a mistake in this case. The park has the ubiquitous camping, etc, but it also has some great hiking trails in the woods, an observation tower, and frontage along the Vermilion River! What's not to like? Visit the park and experience the beauty of the forest and the river at all seasons of the year. This visit, we took the walk down to the river. It has been dry, so the river was very low, and we could go out on a sandbar to explore. Some folks obviously peel out over the steep river bank to get down to the sandbar, but if you walk a bit further along the bank, you'll come to some easier access points that are recommended not only to save getting you muddy or sore, but also to reduce bank erosion. The hike down to the river is wooded, and passes right by the observation tower. Go on up there and take a look around if you're so inclined!

The former home of Dr. William Fithian, one of Abraham Lincoln's cronies.
Many cities, large and small, are proud and quick to brag about their native sons and daughters. But how many cities the size of Danville, Illinois, with 32,523 residents in 2013, can boast of so many well-known and accomplished celebrities--Gene Hackman, Dick Van Dyke, Donald O'Connor, Bobby Short and Jerry Van Dyke? They play prominent roles in the history of Danville and surrounding Vermilion County, which is magnificently displayed in the Vermilion County Museum. Located at 116 North Gilbert Street, the museum is housed in a home built by pioneer physician William Fithian, who in his lifetime served as prairie legislator, horseback doctor, Civil War surgeon and personal friend of Abraham Lincoln. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Lincoln spoke from a balcony of the house on September 21, 1858. The exterior of the Vermilion County Museum was designed to resemble the old Vermilion County Courthouse in 1833. The main building is located directly behind the Fithian House. The Lincoln Room contains the original floor that Lincoln walked upon and the canopied bed in which he slept. Other exhibits include a 1930s era street, the interior of a coal mine shaft, a recreation of the Lincoln/Lamon law office and an early 1900 school room. Few towns of this size have so much to be proud of.

This is a fully licensed, inspected moonshine still, a stone's throw from the Indiana State Line. The still is in plain view and operating when the distillery is open. This is real deal moonshine made from sour mash that is brewed on the site. We bought 4 bottles after we tasted the run that was in progress. It was a Saturday and demand was outpacing supply early. The owner has plans to age some of his product in oak barrels for sale as a Bourbon. Not sure what my kinfolk in Kentucky would say about that title, but I bet it will be some tasty whiskey.

Very nice location. It is located at the historic Lincoln Park. Check hours on their website becasue they don't have regular hours and seasons.
