Częstochowa, [t͡ʂɛ̃stɔˈxɔva] ( listen), is a city in southern Poland on the Warta River with 240,027 inhabitants as of June 2009. It has been situated in the Silesian Voivodeship (administrative division) since 1999, and was previously the capital of the Częstochowa Voivodeship (1975–1998). However, Częstochowa is historically part of Lesser Poland, not of Silesia, and before 1975 (see: Partitions of Poland), it belonged to the Kraków Voivodeship. Częstochowa is located in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. It is the 13th most populous city in Poland. It is the largest economic, cultural and administrative hub in the northern part of the Silesian Voivodeship.

The tour was booked in advance for us by our travel agent. We were picked up on time from another hotel around the corner from us. The coach was clean (brand new) and comfortable. A very friendly and knowledgeable guide accompanied us on the coach. During the journey there was a documentary shown on the history of Auschwitz. On arrival at Auschwitz 1, we were given around 30 minutes to visit the toilets and purchase refreshments at the restaurant. It was very very busy with long queues (I would recommend taking a packed lunch which some hotels supply, to save queuing). For the tour you go in smaller groups with a tour guide, you are given headsets so you can hear what is said. Our guide was very knowledgeable and passionate. My review is not of Auschwitz itself (for that I have no words, only great sadness). After Auschwitz 1 there is a 10 minute break for the toilets, then onto Auschwitz 2, Birkenau. It was very cold and bleak. I didn’t complete this tour due to my mobility, it’s a long walk. For those that did, on return it was a very quick toilet break again before climbing back on board for the return journey. The only criticism I would have is that the breaks are short. But I think this is out of control of the tour company due to time constraints at Auschwitz itself, there are thousands of visitors so I think tours are strictly timed.

We were picked up on time by Wojciech. He was a fantastic guide. From start to finish we were looked after perfectly. It is quite a long drive but absolutely worth it. The scenery is outstanding. We enjoyed seeing traditional wooden houses and 15th century Church of St Michael the Archangel. Rafting in Dunajec was pleasant. The rafts hold 12 people and it was quite busy. I recommend if you visit Krakow allow yourself 6 days as there is so much to see and do.

That was a really good trip. We were picked up from our hotel. Our driver explained us everything and was waiting for us in the car to drive us to Birkenau and after to our hotel. Guide was a real professional and he anwsered all our questions. We used Krakow Direct and it was superb. Remember to get some snacks or lunch as the tour is really exhausting and there is no time to seat & eat.

As we think about Poland, we see a christian country, with a devout religious community. Christian culture and architecture was growing constantly for a thousand years since 966 Poland has adopted Christianity. Whilst visiting Krakow it is worth focusing on the Christian part of Poland’s history. You simply have to leave your hotel to encounter an enormous amount of churches, basilicas, and sacral sculptures- but very close to Krakow we have something even more special. Located in the city of Częstochowa is Poland's national shrine icon, which have drawn pilgrims from across the globe for centuries. Long popular with pilgrims and holidaymakers, the most famous Polish sanctuary with the holy icon of the Black Madonna.

The Jasna Gora hill is located in Czestochowa, a small town 130 km north-west from Krakow. It is where a famous sanctuary and cloister are located. The sight is considered one of the most important when it comes to the worship of St. Mary, it is also the most popular pilgrimage destination in Poland. This is mostly thanks to the sacred painting of St. Mary of Częstochowa the Mother of Jesus and other sacred art. Since 1994 the place has enjoyed the status of a monument to history.

Went as smooth as clockwork. Chris is personable, knows his stuff and delivers in an informative way. Bespoke private service. Faultless 6 stars. Nice guy, follow this advice. You get what you pay for but he is a bargain.

Our family spent several days in Krakow in the safe and very friendly hands of our most knowledgable and highly skilled driver Alek. He was prompt collecting us from the apartment, and he had a unique knowledge of his city and homeland. Alek added considerable value to the trip to Auschwitz-Birkenau, and was very patient with our granddaughter. On the following day he drove us to the Salt Mines in very difficult weather conditions . On the last day he took me to the shooting range, and afterwards showed me the picturesque lake and facilities of Krakow Bagry. Both his reliability and dependability ensured that our trip to Krakow was a complete success. We would highly recommend the company he works for namely 'Welcome in Krakow'. We hope to return to the city and avail ourselves again of the company's and Alek's expertise. Brilliant!
