Spire of Lloyd

This inland lighthouse was designed by Henry Aaron Baker (designer of the King’s Inn, Dublin) for the First Earl of Bective in memory of his father Sir Thomas Taylor in 1791.At 30m high, one can see magnificent views of the surrounding countryside as far as the Mourne Mountains in County Down, Northern Ireland on a clear day. The Spire was used to view horse racing and the hunt in the 19th century. The spires stands on the site of an iron age ring fort. The community park (The People’s Park) includes the “Paupers Graveyard”, in which many, many victims of the mid-19th century famine lie buried.

Slane Castle

Reviewed By CanIstay - County Wicklow, Ireland

Visits to Slane Castle are more restricted at this time due to the pandemic, but guides Matthew and Pauric use that to make you feel more like a special guest. Both are affable and knowledgeable, obviously loving their job. Castle is a misnomer, it is a substantial palatial house, but built on a spot where I am sure many versions of defensive castles stood before. For those who come only to see a castle, they will be surprised at the colour family history, both in bygone days and in the more recent history of music at the end of the 20th century and indeed to the present. It is a family home to this day and in the reception rooms you can see that. A fire in the 1990s could have finished it, but instead lead to very necessary upgrading so now it just becomes part of its history. The distillery is currently closed but I will be back when it is open and may do the castle again! Tip, do go on to see the Hill of Slane to see some more of the historical significance of this area.

Bective Abbey

Great place to visit, very old, very atmospheric. As it is away from main roads it is seldom packed so great opportunity to wander around and consider the life of the original inhabitants. In very good condition and a super place to take photos. For anyone interested in history or architecture it is a must see.

Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul

Reviewed By ChitchatCanada

We stopped here while we were doing the Trim River walk and were very surprised at the height of these ruins and how intact some walls of this cathedral are........so much so that it was easier to visualize what it may have looked like in its prime. Very enjoyable and worthwhile site.

The Tomb of The Jealous Man and Woman

Nice ruins, nice walk. The cemetery is still active which is interesting to see, since some tombs are hundreds of years old. Trim is one of my favourite spots in Ireland for medieval walks and this is a nice part of it.
