Myself and my husband stopped by here yesterday only with the intention of viewing the inside of the church. We were greeted within moments once inside by Gerry, who offered us a 5 min or 5 week guided tour of the place (which is free). We could have easily gone with the 5 week version, so enthralling was his discourse on the history of Ireland through which he highlighted aspects which we'd never been aware of. We will definitely be returning hopefully later this summer to finish the rest of this discussion - although like his analogy of history as strands of thread which lead back to different outcomes, there may never be a definitive conclusion. We could happily have stayed and listened to the unravelling of each threaded story. Kilkenny is a beautiful county with many adorable villages to visit. Gowran is certainly among those and whether your curiosity is peaked by history or not, you will most definitely enjoy the story telling skills and deep knowledge which was provided by Gerry.

Eager to climb a round tower during our time in Ireland, we were happy to find we could do just that in Kilkenny. A bit scary for anyone afraid of heights, the views at the top were expansive and worth the climb. (Their are good railings the whole climb.) There isn't much room at the top so we were glad to go when it wasn't crowded. It also helped to not have too many people trying to climb either up or down at the same time in the narrow space of the tower. The cathedral was lovely and had a very informative self-guided tour with lots of points of interest. We actually preferred it to St Patrick's and Christ Church in Dublin.

Go to see the Cantwell Fada, an effigy of a knight from the 1300's. Said to be the top of his tomb, it now sets upright so you can really see just how big and lifelike it is. Worth the visit!

We found this church a lovely place to come and pray, inside the lighting was very well done. The organ music made it feel even more of a spiritual home
