These days , and I understand the reasons...there are few moats surrounding ancient building that actually hold water in them! This one did not disappoint. There was an array of exhibitions on offer although I am sad the locality exhibition had been moved for the Egyptian exhibition. A huge variety of exhibitions to savour., I loved the underground area which was available to explore.

Standing opposite the Parc Richelieu, the Calais Museum of Fine Arts houses a vast collection of paintings, sculptures and photographs dating from the sixteenth to the twenty-first century. On the ground floor, the Rodin, from Paris to Calais room is dedicated to the works of the famous sculptor and his studies for the Monument to the Burghers of Calais. The Calais d’ici et d’ailleurs (Calais, here and elsewhere) circuit presents 150 works of the collection. Here, visitors will find major sculptors including Louis-Antoine Barye, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, Antoine Bourdelle, Germaine Richier... together with paintings, watercolours and drawings by Calais artists. On the first floor, through an evocation of the tales of the English writer Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, the visitor discovers the contemporary works of Philippe Ramette, Barry Flanagan, Patrick Tosani and Richard Wentworth, associated or contrasted with older paintings and sculptures.
