El Rincón de la Saeta - the corner dedicated to the Saeta, the heartful song that is sung in Semana Santa - Holy Week - to the images of Jesus and Mary in the processions. It's just at the top of the Calle Sevilla, a stone's throw from the main Parish church. Calle Sevilla has three charming little squares made where an old house has been pulled down. Walk down past this spot and see the others too: Pasaje de Doña Francisca Contreras and Pasaje de María Cintrano. The Rincón de la Saeta is a truly lovely little corner of Estepona, with flowerpots and a bust of Antonio Machado, the poet who wrote the well-known poem about the Saeta. It is on the wall here, on a ceramic poetry plaque. This is a favourite place for people to take photos, either leaning against the bust of Machado, or sitting on the bench. Get your friends and family all lined up! Here is my own English translation of the poem. "A voice called from the crowd: "Who will lend me a ladder to climb the wooden cross to remove the nails from Jesus of Nazareth?" Oh, the saeta, the song to Christ of the gypsies, always with blood-stained hands, from always removing the nails Song of the Andalusian people where every spring they go asking for ladders to climb up to the cross Song of my homeland that tosses flowers to the Jesus of agony the faith of my forefathers Oh, you are not my song! I cannot sing, nor want to to this Jesus of the cross, but to He who walked on the waters of the sea" A very emotional, very Andalusian, poem, and a charming corner of beautiful Estepona. Gorgeous!

The heart of this gorgeous little town is its Old Town, which is just like a garden! It's called "The Garden of the Costa del Sol" for a reason: because it is filled with flowers all year round. And especially in the gorgeous little streets and plazas in the centre of town. It all started in about 2012 when they needed to do something about the water supply to some of the streets in the Old Town, which involved digging up the streets. "How about instead of putting down more tarmac, we put down pretty cobbles or pebbles?" said one person. "We could take away the parking too, thereby opening up the streets", said another. "Or even just plan a few drive-through routes, and make the rest of them pedestrianised", was another contribution. "People whitewash their houses regularly, and many people have a few pots. How about having a planned display of pots, co-ordinating the colours and the flowers, and setting up apprenticeships in gardening to have youngsters learning how to look after the plants?". And so the beautiful heart of Estepona was born! There are over a hundred of these renovated and decorated streets and plazas. In a dozen places, a tumble-down house has been bought by the Ayuntamiento (Town Hall) the space cleared, and a charming little square built with a fountain, a bench, and pots. In other places, a whole street has changed out of all recognition as people can now sit outside, chat with neighbours, watch the municipal pot-waterers on their rounds with huge cisterns on wheels! You can stroll at leisure, turning here and there, every corner shows another beautiful street. It's just gorgeous!

Not sure how we heard of this statue, but we certainly wanted to find it and see it. We had seen the one outside of Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, and so it seemed like a thing to do in Malaga. Even though we knew the “general” location (the busy intersection of Calle Molina Lario and the Plaza de la Marina) it wasn’t that easy to find. It is about 100 - 200 feet in from the intersection and trees & kiosks sort of block the view unless you really look. It’s a wonderful statue and certainly a photo op.... It is as nice as the other in Copenhagen. Half the fun was trying to find it.
